Ray was born on April 9, 1883 to Benjamin Ruff Grinstead and Kate Amanda (nee Rugh) on a family farm near Azen in Scotland County Missouri.

He married Nellie Donn and they lived in Washington DC where Ray was employed by the US Government.

He died in August of 1956 in Washington DC.
