Father, John Jacob Rugh Jr. (1784-1869)
or
Son, John Michael Rugh (1817-1893)
(???)
(There has been uncertainty as to which of these two individuals is actually pictured here)
Copies of the picture on the left were provided by various family members and were thought to represent Jacob. The picture on the right has been provided more recently by Tipton Biggs as the son of Jacob (Michael).
With the picture on the right now available the subject appears to me to be about 40-45 years of age, rather than 60 years or over as previously thought.
Both photos were obviously taken at the same time and appear to be the same man. Note the same clothing (except the hat) in both photos. Also note the same camera angle for both photos, and a similar pose.
The 40 - 45 year age makes the subject unlikely to be Jacob. To be Jacob the photo would have had to have been taken about 1824-1830 when he was 40-45 years old. I don't think photography had advanced to this point by then.
Assuming the subject of both is Michael, the picture would have been taken about 1857-60. This is at a time when this type of photography was becoming much more readily available.
Thus I think Mr. Tipton Biggs has it right. The person pictured here is John Michael Rugh, the son of Jacob, and the father of Henry.
