"Aunt Mary -Teacher - School Unknown)"

"Aunt Mary" is Mary (Rugh) Cook, daughter of Henry and Caroline (Terrell) Rugh who taught school for a time before she married.

I have been told that she taught at the little "Elm Grove School" for a time. Her first year being 1898.

With some magnification and an increase in contrast, it can be seen that one of the girls in the front row here is holding a "slate" as a sign. I can see that it says:

"------- View School"

"--------------- (then an unreadable but probable date)"

Mr. Tipton Biggs informs us that he was familiar with four little school houses in Scotland county during his time. He attended the "CLAY POINT" School. He reports that there was an "ELM GROVE" School to the north, an "AZEN" School to the north-east, and a "FAIRVIEW" School located to the east of Claypoint at that time.

My mother mentions attending an "UPTON" school to the north-east (at the Iowa border).

It is very likely the above is a photo of the FAIRVIEW School.

Assuming my prior information about Mary teaching at Elm Grove is correct, she must have taught at more than one school.
