Consolidated - Vultee RB-36H
Photographed on July 2002 - parked on display at Castle Air Museum, Atwater, California.
This particular aircraft, the only surviving RB-36, is a reconnaissance bomber. The aircraft was disassembled at Chanute AFB in Illinois and brought in 14 Sante Fe railway cars to what was then Castle AFB at Atwater (near Merced) in California. It was then reassembled to form the display you see here.
When in service this peacemaker bomber was assigned to the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota. It still displays the markings of that unit.
To get a feel for the relative size note that the power pole is actually shorter than the tail and that the nose of the plane in the foreground right is actually about 150 feet from the B36 fuselage.
