Richard Smirk(e) RUSSELL and Emeline BLANK

1. Richard Smirke RUSSELL was born 18 Mar 1814 in London and was christened 28 May 1820 in Lewisham, Kent, England along with several brothers and sisters. He died in Pleasant Grove, Olmsted, MN 6 Apr 1878 and is buried in Union Evergreen Cemetery. Richard emigrated to New York City about 1837 where he married the following year. Soon after marriage they settled in Pinegrove, Venango, PA where he owned a piece of land and was a teacher. On 13 Apr 1852 he was commissioned Justice of the Peace for Pinegrove Township. After a few more years the family made the trip to Minnesota overland with a wagon and a cow ending their journey at Pleasant Grove, Olmsted, MN in time to be counted in the 1857 territorial census. Family tradition says that Richard returned to England 6 times but passenger lists have not been found for any of these trips.

Richard married Emeline BLANK, daughter of  John and Jane (MYERS) BLANK, on 12 Dec 1838 in New York City. The marriage was performed by Rev. William M. Stilwell. Emeline was born in New York City 10 Mar 1815 and died 12 Apr 1888 in Pleasant Grove, Olmsted, MN.  Along with her husband she is buried in Union Evergreen Cemetery. In Pinegrove, PA she substituted for her husband in teaching school.

  2 F i Caroline Venango RUSSELL was born 17 Jun 1839 in Pinegrove, Venango, PA and died 29 Jan 1923 in Webster, Day, SD. Caroline married her first cousin, Frederick Hector RUSSELL 25 Dec 1862 in Pleasant Grove, Olmsted, MN.  Fred was the son of Stephen John and Louisa (ROGERS) RUSSELL.
  3 F ii Mary A. RUSSELL was born 15 Feb 1841 in Pinegrove, Venango, PA.  Mary was called "Mate" by the family. The date and place of death of "Aunt Mate" has not been found. At the time of the 1880 census she was living in Hudson, Douglas, MN. The obit of her brother Richard V. RUSSELL in 1906 said she was living in Billings, MT. "Mate" married Francis P. "Frank" DENNY or DENNEY about 1862.  He was probably the son of Barauch DENNY/DENNEY of Pleasant Grove, MN.
  4 M iii Charles Wilson RUSSELL was born 26 Oct 1842 in Pinegrove, Venango, PA and died 16 Mar 1927 in Rochester, Olmsted, MN. During the Civil War Charles served in Co. H of the 6th Minn. Inf. He married 31 Jan 1869 Martha Jane LOVELACE who was born about 1843 in PA and died in 1935.
  5 M iv Arthur James RUSSELL was born 13 Dec 1844 in Pinegrove, Venango, PA and died 14 Apr 1911 in Minneapolis, MN. Arthur married 23 Nov 1876 Catherine H. NEILL who was born in Chatauqua Co., New York about 1855, a daughter of John NEILL who had settled in Sumner, Fillmore, MN by 1870.
  6 M v Richard Victor RUSSELL was born 23 May 1847 in Pinegrove, Venango, PA and died 13 Apr 1906 in Rochester, MN.  Richard was a barber and dressed up as "Uncle Sam" for parades.  He was featured in Ripley's "Believe It Or Not" newspaper section. Richard married Clara A. GOFF of Cummingsville 3 Jul 1870. Clara worked as a hair dresser. At the time of the 1920 census she was living with her son, Samuel Barton RUSSELL, in Rochester, MN.
  7 F vi Emeline Amanda RUSSELL was born 20 Jun 1849 in Pinegrove, Venango, PA and died 23 Jan 1941 in Los Angeles, CA. She married Edwin Leon DORR 14 Nov 1871 in Chatfield, Fillmore, MN. He died 29 Dec 1923 in Los Angeles, CA
   8  M  vii Rosser Henry RUSSELL was born 11 May 1852 in Pinegrove, Venango, PA and died 18 Feb 1936 in Stewartville, Olmsted, MN. He was named for his grandfather, Henry ROSSER. Ross m(1) 20 Jan 1880 in Spring Valley, Fillmore, MN  Helen Josephine PARTRIDGE/PATTRIDGE.  She was born 25 Jan 1857 in Pleasant Grove, Olmsted, MN and died 17 Sep 1889 in Pleasant Grove and is buried in Union Evergreen Cemetery. Helen was the daughter of Albert and Eunice (BRADISH) PARTRIDGE/PATTRIDGE. Ross m(2) 27 Nov 1890 Alice Ellen McINTOSH who was born 23 Aug 1867 in Kansas City, KS and died 26 Apr 1941 in Stewartville, Olmsted, MN.
9 F viii Ella Harper RUSSELL was born 11 Feb 1854 in Pinegrove, Venango, PA and died 15 Feb 1934 in San Leandro, Alameda, CA. Ella was called "Nell" by the family and was named after her cousin, Ella HARPER who died in 1852 in Venango Co., PA.  She married Hugh A. NEILL who was born in Westfield, Chatauqua, NY about 1860, a son of John NEILL. Hugh died in February 1903.
