This web site is designed to be used as a tool for tracing and documenting records found concerning those Philbert families who descended from John Philbert of Charles Co., MD, and whose records appear from abt. 1722. A few--in MO and AL--spelled their name, Filbert--or the clerks, tombstone cutters, etc. insisted on spelling it that way.
Please let me know if corrections need to be made, or if you have additional information you would like to share, you may E-mail me, Yvonne Philbert Self. Please type Philbert in the subject line.

A brief history of the Philbert family:
After being in Charles Co., MD for a number years, records can be found in Virginia concerning Horton/Wharton and Archibald Philbert--Horton in Prince William, Co., and Archibald in Lunenburg County. Note the interesting variations of the name, Philbert, in Lunenburg Co. marriages.
Wharton/Horton and Archibald Philbert were listed in Fothergill's VA Taxpaxers, 1782-87, then on the 1790 US Census. The 1790 census also showed John Philbert, Charles Co., MD, and Joseph Philbert in Prince George Co; however, this web site concerns the descendants of Wharton B. and Archibald Philbert.
Wharton B. Philbert [over 45 yrs] was listed on the 1810 and 1820 Censuses in Clark Co., KY.
Luke Philbert was on the 1820 census in Clark Co., KY after serving in the War of 1812 as a Corporal and marrying Nancy Lane in 1815. He was in Washington Co. IN in 1830 [census], and then in Owen Co., IN by 1831 or 1832 where he was an early teacher. [History of Owen Co, ed. by Charles Blanchard 1884, pub. by the Owen Co. Historical Society 1977, p. 760.] A land record shows he owned land in Owen County in 1835.
A Bible passed down through the family of Joel Philbert, now in the possession of Sandra Necco, who also contributed the photo of Cynthia , shows the children of Luke and Nancy Philbert: Matilda, Wharton B., Luke, Samantha, Cynthia, Joel, Nancy, Mordica, and James. Matilda marr. Samuel Hicks Jr. and was in Owen Co in 1850 [census]; Wharton B. and Luke moved to Linn Co., MO by 1850. Luke moved to CA bet 1855 & 1857. Wharton B. marr., served in the Civil War, and remained in MO. Cynthia married Stephen Scott & moved to Kansas by 1870, then to CO where she died. Joel marr. Ruth Bowen in Owen Co., then he & James moved to Greene Co. [James lived in Arkansas 1880]; Nancy marr. John Wise and is bu. in Owen Co. Mordica is untraced by me.
Marriages of several Philberts were recorded in Clark and Madison Co., KY including Luke, Benjamin, Fuel, Susan to Abraham Goldman, and Polly to Absolom Gravitt.
Luke, Fuel, and Polly [Gravitt] were in Washington Co., IN by 1830 [census], as was a Cleo Philbert; unknown.
Fuel Philbert married Alice Fullilove/Fullerton in Madison Co., KY 1824, was listed on the 1830 census in Washington Co., and in 1835, a land record was made out in the name of Alice Philbert. Allis Filbert married Joseph Bradley in Howard Co., MO. Records of possible children of Fuel and Alice Philbert have not been found by me.
Benjamin and Ann Woods Philbert moved to Missouri in the 1830s; a land record in Howard County, MO was recorded in 1836. Records for this family and their descendants can be located in Howard, Clay (1850), and Gentry Co. [by 1860--census], Missouri. A marriage record in Buchanan Co., MO shows Ann Filbert married Berry Preston 1842. Ann Philbert and her six children can be found on the 1840 Census, Buchanan Co., MO, and are listed on the 1850 Clay Co., MO census living with Berry Preston--Marinda, Charles, Malinda, Sarah, [Francis] Marion, and George W.
Not all the Philberts in Missouri were descendents of Benjamin and Ann Woods. Other Philbert families moved into Missouri from France, Germany, Russia, etc.; relationship unknown.
Abraham and Susan/Susannah Philbert Goldman were in Pike Co., IL by 1830, and records can be found for decades concerning this family. Susan [Susannah] will still living in 1850 with son Jacob, his second wife, Otelia, who was born in Germany, their children and children by his first wife, Hetty Wade, and son Charles according to the US Census, Pike Co.,IL. A researcher informed me she was buried in the Griggsville City Cemetery in 1854, but her tombstone does not show dates. Their grandson Newton B. Goldman was on the roll of honor for his service during the Civil War.
Mary "Polly" Philbert Gravit and family were in Owen Co., IN, Jefferson Township, in 1850
Descendants of the Philbert families who lived in Lunenburg Co., VA, migrated to South Carolina, and into Alabama by 1840. Andrew and William Philbert died while serving from Alabama in the Civil War.

: -- "Biographical Memoirs of Greene County, Ind. with Reminiscences of Pioneer Days", B.F. Bowen & Co., Indianapolis, IN, 1908, pages 672-676. This was on a Greene Co. message board, posted by Diane Drogich--"Wharton B. Filbert [Philbert], the subject's great-grandfather...his grandfather, Luke Filbert [Philbert]...served in the war of 1812. Joel Filbert [Philbert], son of Luke and father of James B.,...served three years during the late rebellion, as did his two brothers, James and Wharton, the former in the Thirty-first Indiana Infantry, the latter in a Missouri regiment...." James B. Filbert [Philbert] married, but no issue. -- "Biographical Memoirs of Greene County, Ind. with Reminiscences of Pioneer Days", B.F. Bowen & Co., Indianapolis, IN, 1908, pages 672-676. There is also a biography about Joel Philbert written in the History of Greene and Sullivan Counties, State of Indiana, from the Earliest Time to the Present; Together with Interesting Biographical Sketches, Reminiscences, Notes, Etc., published 1884 in Chicago by Goodspeed Bros. & Co., pp. 432 & 433. "Joel Philbert, farmer, was born in Washington County, Ind., November 24, 1825, a son of Luke and Nancy (Lane) Philbert, who were natives of Kentuckey [VA], where they were reared, married and resided a number of years. [Note--They married in Clarke Co., KY, and Luke served in the War of 1812 in Clarke Co, KY as a Corporal]. They came to Washington County, this State, at an early day, but after a few years moved to Owen County [see Land Records], where they passed the remainder of their days engaged in agricultural pursuits. Joel Philbert was reared on the farm of his parents, his youthful years being passed in the pioneer pursuits which fell to the lot of the sons of early settlers. While in Owen County, he was married to Miss Ruth Bowen, and previous to the rebellion removed to Greene County, where he engaged in farming, and from where, in August, 1862, he enlisted in Company F, Ninety-seventh Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He served his county with fidelity, participating in the battles of Jackson, Mission Ridge, all through the Atlanta campaign, with Sherman on his memorable march to the sea, and was finally discharged in June, 1865. After the war, he returned to his home in Greene County, where he has since resided and where his wife died July 12, 1876, after bearing a family of six children, as follows: Charles L., James B., George F., Florence M. and two that died in infancy. [Note--one infant named Wharton is buried in the Abrell Cemetery in Owen Co., IN; another tombstone is beside the family tombtstone that includes two children, Franklin S. and Zachariah, who died in their teen--see Cemeteries, Indiana, Sullivan County for photos of this unique tombstone.] July 18, 1877, Mr. Philbert married for his second and present wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Haney who was born in Ohio in the year 1833. The greater portion of Mr. Philbert's life has been passed in farming, although previous to the late war he made ten trips to New Orleans on flat-boats with grain, produce, etc. He began life a poor boy, and although not a man of great wealth, yet he has, by hard work and frugality, secured a good farm of 180 acres. In politics, he is a Democrat, although liberal in his views on all things. He is deeply interested all matters of public welfare, and is one of the country's well-known and useful citizens." A copy of this biography was sent to me by my cousin, Phyllis Simms.INDIANA BIRTHS

Permelia's tombstone inscription, from other researchers, had 1880 for date of death. The Permelia Filbert on the 1910 Gentry Co., Census, living with John H. Filbert is listed as John's step-mother; no children born to her; both parents born TN. According to the 1880 Census, Permelia, wife of Francis M. Filbert, was 36, her father was born Ohio, and Mother born. Missouri [hd to read, but definitely not TN]. Read the obit of Francis Marion Filbert carefully. This suggests a second marriage and states his "former companion" has already been buried. Was this Permelia on the 1910 census in fact Malinda? Malinda's parents were both born TN. Malinda was the widow of Francis Filbert on the Civil War Pension Record.

Struck and Killed by Automobile
Scott Philbert Dies As Result of Injuries
Scott Philbert, a resident of Point Arena, was run over by an automobile, driven by Charles Norberry, jr., of Fort Bragg last Wednesday and died soon after from the effects of the injuries he received.
The accident occurred near the Evergreen Cemetery at Point Arena. Young Norberry, a 17-year-old lad, was taking two drummers to the south-coast town in his auto, and when passing the cemetery, swerved out of the road to avoid running over a dog which had run in front of the car.
Philbert in some way got directly in the path of the car, and before the driver could stop his machine, it knocked the unfortunate man down, and one of the fore wheels passed over his body. Philbert was at once taken to Point Arena, where he passed away a short time afterwards.
An inquest was held over the remains and the coroner's jury, after due investigation, exonerated the youth.
Deceased was about 70 years of age and was unmarried. He was a brother of Charles Philbert, driver of the down-coast stage, who is well-known here. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon at point Arena.
So far as we are able to learn, this is the first instance in the history of this coast where a person has been run over and killed by an automobile, although such accidents are by no means rare occurrences in other sections.
