Raymond Patrick (Pat) Cahill
by Pat CaltonPat Cahill was the husband of Cora Irene Key and my father. He was somewhat of a drifter until he was almost 43 years old and married my mother. He made an attempt to settle down on a small farm near Coloma, Missouri about the time I was born, but it wasn't until his retirement in 1966 that he finally settled down in one place. As I was growing up he owned or operated a number of businesses and farms. He was an avid fisherman all his life. He also loved to sing, which he did not do well. One day he and my husband, Bill Calton, were out in the boat going down the lake when Bill heard a strange noise and thought something was wrong with the outboard motor. Imagine his surprise when he discovered it was just Pat singing.
He ran away to join the army when he was only 15 years old because everyone he knew was going to WWI. He was discovered in South Carolina and promptly returned to Kansas City. He was drafted at the age of 42, when WWII was on. He spent six months in the army serving as a cook in Texas. He turned out to be a very good cook and even after his retirement at age 65 he could be found up making cookies as early as 3 a.m., so he could take small packages of them around the trailer park at Gravois Mills, Missouri to deliver as he made his morning rounds checking on "his old people".
He operated a tavern in Slater, Missouri and could often be found sitting at a big round table playing pitch, poker, and black jack. He also frequented the local pool hall where he was an excellent shot' running the snooker table on more than one occasion.
He worked as an anodizer at a small plant in Kansas City, Missouri, Quality Finishing Co. for several years before his retirement. He also worked as a tree trimmer in Kansas City, where he was admonished almost daily for not wearing the safety belt. He is buried in the Versailles,
Missouri cemetery.Raymond married Cora Irene KEY, daughter of John Andrew KEY and Ailcey Adeline NANCE, on 16 Jun 1943. Cora was born on 22 Jun 1900 in Coloma, Carroll county, Missouri. She died on 20 Apr 1999 in Versailles, Morgan county, Missouri and was buried in Versailles City cemetery, Versailles, Morgan county, Missouri.
Irene (Key)(Bowen) Cahill
by Pat CaltonMy Mother, Irene Cahill, was born and raised in Carroll County, Missouri; near Coloma, Missouri. She grew up and married Otey Bowen and they had a son, Robert Bowen. She and Otey did various jobs; such as following a threshing crew through Nebraska where Otey worked in the
fields and she helped cook for the crew. They lived in a tent that summer which was in the early 1920's. After my brother was born Otey worked in the mines and died of black lung when my brother was only five years old. At this time Irene and Bobbie went to live in Bogard, Missouri with her sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Roy Bingham. Irene
worked in a local cafe where she met my Father, Raymond Patrick (Pat) Cahill. Not sure if she was ready to marry Pat, Irene moved to Kansas City and went to work in the Forum cafeteria. Pat followed her and they were wed in a quiet ceremony in Kansas City on June 16, 1943. They
remained married until Pat's death in March, 1990. She helped him in the stores and cafes they ran in the 1950's and when they moved to Kansas City she went to work at Kline's department store and at several nursing homes. As much as they moved around all she ever really wanted to do was move back to Bogard, but this was to never happen. She loved to sew and crochet and made most of my school clothes. She took extreme pride in her perfect hand-stitched buttonholes which she enjoyed putting down the
front of many shirts and blouses. In the mid 1950's Pat bought her a sewing machine that made buttonholes, but she never thought they were as nice as the hand-stitched ones. She spent her later life as a resident of the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Versailles, Missouri. Otey Bowen is buried in the cemetery at Coloma and Pat Cahill is buried in the
Versailles, Missouri cemetery.
