Pat must have always wanted to have been a soldier, because he ran away from home during World War I to join the army. He was shipped to a base on the east coast before it was discovered that he wasn't but 15 years of age, and was returned to his home in Kansas City. My Aunt Sue Chambers used to have a Kansas City newspaper clipping about his brief stay in the Army.He was drafted near the end of World War II when he was about 43 years old. He only spent six months in the Army, and was a cook in Texas. I have a couple of Army photos and a postcard he sent to his parents.
He often spoke of the Army as the best paying job he ever had, but you have to consider his sense of humor. He only served six months, and the pay was very low, but since it was wartime when he reached the age of 65 he qualified for an Army pension and medical benefits. He drew this pension until his death at the age of 89.
