Mannix, O'Mannis, O'Manihan ( Mac Neice)
Mannix is the usual form
in English of the Gaelic surname
O'Mainichin ( derived
from manach - a monk ) a minor sept of
Corca Laoidhe in
SW Cork :
It is placed in the " Book
of Lecan "
and other mediaeval
manuscripts in O' Hennessey territory at the
head of Ross Bay.
An obsolete anglicised
form is O' Mannis. The
name is now scarce-being
rarely found outside SW Munster.
Mannihan, Manahan,
MacNeice, MacNaois, MacAonghuis,
Mac Geins.

Lecan.....600pp early 15th C.( Royal Irish Academy
The
Irish language derives from a dialect called Q Celtic. The Menapii of Belgium
appear
on Ptolemy's map of Ireland in Wexford - later they are found in Ulster
under
the Q Celtic form of their name as the Fir-Manach.
Angus:
Originally Aonghush - ( Gaelic for
' unique choice ' )
Its
first known bearer was Aonghus Turinleach in the 3rd C BC.
He was, it is said,
one
of three brothers from Ireland who invaded and ruled Scotland, bequeathing his
name to the county. But the name also continued in Ireland : A King Aonghus
of Munster gave St Patrick half of his family of 24 children - to become monks
and nuns. Apparently never used outside the Celtic areas, Angus took odd forms
in the Middle Ages.
In
the Arthurian romances, there is a King Anguish of Orkney and classically minded
scholars regard it as identical with Aeneas.
Possibly
the visit of Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini to Scotland as Papal Legate in the 15th
C encouraged the amalgamation. Aeneas or Eneas, has remained in use there to
this day, and is supposed to have given the surname MacNeice.

NB -
Honora Ford must be the mother of Norry Russell
of Dacre St - census 1851 - although she is not living with her daughter in
1851 - perhaps she is now-1855. [ check 1861 census ]- or sister ?
There appears to be very little information regarding the family after
this time until the records of 1871 - So where were they for approx. 25 years?
Mary Parks nee O' Neill suggests Witton Park as a place where the family lived
- so more research is required. I saw no sign of the Mannix family in the census
records for Witton Park in 1871 or 1861 - but I could have overlooked them.
John Mannix of 628 Acklam Rd suggests that this Patrick Mannix
could have returned to relatives in Loghill Limerick - because he recalls visiting
an uncle Paddy c 1931 with his father Jim. They visited Drumcullaher first because
the Barrys came from there-a William Barry married a Ann Egan in 1876-She was
the daughter of a Mary Ellen Mannix of Charleville Limerick and a Michael Egan . Mary Barry was the daughter of a John Barry
and Mary Smith and cousin of Kevin Barry son of William Barry and Ellen Hollywood.
1871
Mary Hagan of Dacre St marries a Manix
Records suggest that Honora Russell (FORD) was living in ESTON JUNCTION
at this time -she aged 54, her husband Thomas aged 55.
Further investigation might provide evidence of other occupants of
household.

This would suggest that John and Margaret married c 1879 /1880
-
possibly in South Bank - and Patrick Manix was born c 1880 in South
Bank
His Baptismal Records should verify this in St Peter's South Bank - unless
it was part of St Mary's Cathedral in those days.........

An Edward Burt was a witness to Mary Ellen's marriage to Patrick

If we opt for the
Younger Edward aged 26 the matching Margaret O’Neill as the other
witness would be aged
