Oxlade Family History

"Dwellers in the Valley of the Oaks"

Recollections

Margaret

"I am the grandaughter of Elizabeth Henrietta Oxlade, and great-grandaughter of James Isaac Oxlade and Rebecca Springle or Springall. Elizabeth Henrietta Oxlade was born at Harefield, Uxbridge in 1889 and married Elias Dunsby of Colnbrook at Eton in 1913. Elizabeth and Elias Dunsby had nine children James Oxlade Dunsby born 1911, Elizabeth Rebecca Oxlade Dunsby 1912, John, Emily Mary Dunsby who was my mother born 12 December 1914, William, Martha (known as Margaret), June (known as Pamela), Evelyn and Helen.

"Great Aunt Rosa Ann Oxlade went to Australia on a cheap ticket, though came back to the U.K. a couple of times, I saw her once, she married out there, he got squashed by cattle, so she did the next best thing, married the foreman. Sensible women, the Oxlades.

James Oxlade first born son of Elizabeth Henrietta Oxlade and Elias Dunsby was born in Eton Workhouse 1911, a daughter Elizabeth Rebecca Oxlade followed in 1912, at which Workhouse authorities said Elias Dunsby should pay for their support, at which he said "You'd better come out Lizzie if I'm to pay " They married in 1913 had my mother Emily Mary Dunsby in 1914, then followed 6 more children.

The Marie Stoppes clinic was at the rear of the tenements at Wornington Road W 10 where they lived, but Elizabeth said it was against God to use contraception, she had 9 children.

A sorry tale of James Oxlade 1911, he served as a professional soldier, in India, returned, and within a short time WW2 was declared. As he was on the reserve list was called up, but told "Unfit for service" his parents had always had a lot of bother with him. He caused trouble at a local hotel, the police were called and he was put into Springfield Hospital, as a Shell Shock victim. He stayed there until 1963, when he escaped and followed the bus route home.

Walking to Uxbridge, he ran across a road and being unused to traffic was knocked down by a van, he suffered a broken leg, but died later. I sent for his death certificate, it said complications following a broken leg, caused by a road accident, there was a postmortem and an inquest, but it was a complete accident as he had no idea of crossing roads, he had been inside Springfield Hospital for many years.

William Dunsby was my godfather and a most wonderful man, he served in Burma, and suffered from Malaria."

My tree on Genes Reunited stands at 3400 at present, and I can barely keep up with the demand for information, if it is not Australia, it is New Zealand, California, or somewhere else....such a wonderful hobby.

"It was snowing here this morning and Tim my husband has been out gritting, he is a roadman for the council and it's weird but so was his granfdfather and we live in his bungalow now and so was my grandfather Elias Dunsby married to Elizabeth Oxlade, all for Bucks Council. My mother in law is really interested in following the East family tree, in fact she is potty about it."

Glory Hill Farm Wooburn near High Wycombe Bucks

"I went for a walk yesterday up Glory Hill Lane, it used to lead to Glory Hill Farm, now rebuilt. I walked in my grandmother's footsteps as far as I could, but the lane became overgrown, had to climb on a fence to look over the garden fence to see the farm house and buildings, I'm not too nimble but very nosy. It was a very exciting experience, I looked over hills she had looked out at, all the work doing our family tree was repaid."

Chinnor Steps.

"Yesterday I went looking for Chinnor Steps, and found them , quite a steep climb from opposite the Dog Kennels up to the Wildlife sanctuary. They are quite well worn, perhaps had been made of Railway sleepers originally, this area is where my Oxlade family lived. They made a good shortcut to save going around the Goose Neck."
