OXLADE FAMILY HISTORY

"Dwellers in the Valley of the Oaks"

Brickwalls

John Oxlade 1606 onwards

Query: I have John s/o John  born Fingest c 1606 & marrying Frances Munday there  1 Nov 1627 &  being buried GM 30 Jan 1661.

I agree that John Oxlard could well be his father & that these could be the two John's referred to on the 1632 document not John 1619.

The John bapt 1619 causes me grief however. He cannot be the one to marry Frances Munday.Who is he?

If John Oxlard is John 1606's father, then the former's marriage (1614) to Frances Randall must be his 2nd. Also then John the elder must have had 2 sons called John (1606 & 1619). The will of Johannis Oxlard must be that of John the younger because of the birth date 1606 although I don't agree his date of death as presented on the will.Perhaps by the time of his death he was "the elder" & his son John born c1630 was now "the younger".

Hope this makes sense , but in any case I expect it to have muddied the waters.

Or have I totally got the wrong end of the stick

Best wishes

Dave P

I am sure that if you are confused it is no more than am I. Why couldn't all the Oxlades been Anglicans and had their Christenings recorded like sensible people ? This doesn't explain why all the Burials of those who turned up in the Marriage Records (only Jews and Quakers were allowed to marry legally outside the Anglican Church) and elsewhere don't seem to be recorded.

I have seen the sad notation "put into the ground" for those who weren't Baptised Anglicans but the Church was still required to bury everyone, so what happened to them ?

By this I mean

1.Christopher Oxlade (of Waterend, Sokenchurch) [wife Dorothy] for whom I have a Will and Inventory 1687 and a mention of him when his daughter Rosa (of High Wycombe) married Andreas Miller at Hughenden 1663. Can't find a Christening, Marriage or Burial.

2. Thomas Oxlade (married Martha Clark at Hughenden 1671) Buried Cooks Hall (near Walter Ash where John Oxlade, prob the son of Christopher [mentioned in his Will] , owned /leased property) who leaves land or lease of it at Waterend. I can't find a Christening for him.

3. John Oxlade of Walters Ash left money to his Godson John Oxlade, the son of James Oxlade(who was the son of the above Thomas Oxlade Christened Hughenden 1676). His Will was Witnessed by Daniel Oxlade [C.1676 Hughenden]who was the son of the above.

4. Laurence Oxlade of  Stokenchurch married Katherine Lewse 1602 Bledlow, had children Christened Bledlow & Radnage.1625 Will no Christening or Burial

Is it possible that his son James Oxlade Christened 1603 Bledlow who married Dorothy Hester 1629 Aston Rowant (or was recorded there as Stokenchurch events seem to be) was also known as Christopher who had a wife Dorothy ? James son James Oxlade of Stokenchurch was Apprenticed to a Paviour in London in 1647

Johnn Oxlad the younger, & Frannces Munday married 01 Nov 1627 at Fingest.

John Oxlad chr. 17 Jan 1619 son of John and Frances (Randall ?) Christened at Fingest.

Mary Oxlad chr. 9 Nov 1628 dau. of John the younger and Frances (Munday) Christened at Fingest.

John Oxlad, chr. 30 Mar 1630 son of John the younger and Frances Christened at Fingest.

Robert Oxlad chr. 2 Jun1633 son of John and Frances Christened at Fingest.

Emlea Oxlate daughter of John and Francis Christened 10 Jan 1835 All Saints, Great Marlow

Elizabeth Oxlade daughter of John Oxlade and Frances Christened 1 Jul 1638 All Saints, Great Marlow.

As can be seen in the Charts quite a few of these people don't seem to have a Christening recorded. I have looked in the Parishes where they married as well as all those places associated with the Oxlades. There can be at least three reasons for not finding this information.

    1. The upheaval of the Civil War though this doesn't account for later omissions.

    2. Their parents were living and working away from Buck, Berks, Oxon, particularly the Brickmaking Oxlades. Some of them went to London, Chatham, Kent and Richmond, Surrey in these early times. The problem is compounded in London as they were often rrecorded as Oxley and I suspect other variations.

3. They were either Catholics or Non-conformists and had their children Christened in these Churches,

the records of which are very patchy. Everyone had to marry in the Anglican Church with the exception of Jews and Quakers. The Quakers kept very good records and while many of the families that the Oxlades married into had members who were Quakers, to date I've not found any Oxlades or variant spelling. The Quakers didn't allow marriage with people outside their Faith.

Given the date and place of Marriage, several of these people would appear to be siblings, though unless a Will or more Parish Records turn up it remains conjecture.

Any suggestions regarding this problem or any other would be most welcome.
