1633 Francis J Oxlad, St Peter in the East, Oxford City. ? 1659 John son of Thomas Oxlad at Appleton with Eaton. 12 Oct 1690, Elizabeth Oxly, Noke, Oxford. (See marriage of John Oxlad and Eliz. Speek of Noke in 1689) 1691 Alice Oxlad, St.Peter le Bailey, Oxford 1703 Abt. See Apprenticeship 1718 Thomas son of Thomas OXLAD deceased to John STOW of Great Tew. Carpenter. 10 pounds. See Marriage of Thomas Oxlad & Ann Stow 9 Jun 1702 at Great Haseley. 1706 Richard son of Thomas Oxlad, St Peter in the East, Oxford City. ? Part of Oxford's High Street was also in the parish of St Peter in the East. There were two churches in Oxford named in honour of St Peter. The one that wasn't St Peter in the East was called St Peter le Bailey. Strictly, saying 'Oxford St Peter' is ambiguous. But no part of Oxford High Street was in the parish of St Peter le Bailey. I suppose that Oxford High Street would have been in the parishes of (from West to East) St Martin, All Saints, St Mary the Virgin, and St Peter in the East. [if the above has confused you, stop reading now] There were also two separate streets called 'High Street', in the parishes of St Thomas and St Clements. I would imagine that if the vicar of St Thomas's were entering addresses in his parish register he would quite happily put High Street and mean the one in his parish, not the curving street between Carfax and Magdalen Bridge. People with a larger view of things might have called it 'High Street St Thomas'. Fortunately for the sanity of modern postmen, the latter street is now called 'St Thomas Street'. This is not merely quaintness. If new areas, including old suburbs like St Thomas and St Clements and new suburbs like Cowley, are incorporated into an existing town, what were once unique street names may become duplicates of existing names. A number of streets in Oxford have been renamed (often because there was more than one of the same name.) Do be careful to consider whether the modern name applied in ages past, and vice versa. (House numbers also need careful handling.) Paul Betteridge, Hunt Valley, Maryland, USA* |
