NOTES

'Pauper' in registers of 1787 does not necessarily mean 'receiving parish relief'. There was a law imposing a tax of 3d on baptisms and burials, to be collected by the clergyman and transmitted, whole, to the tax collector. This meant the clergyman was working unpaid, not aconcept he enjoyed. There was a get out clause, saying the money need not be collected from 'paupers'. Result, wholesale increase in the number of alleged paupers stated in the register, often covering everybody but the big land tax paying farmers.
