CHAPMAN-ALLEN 1

05 August 2000

PREPARED BY: Anita Clendinen Enquist, P. 0. Box 246, Warm Springs, GA 31830

PREPARED FOR: Glenn Vaughn Jr., 1801 Elmwood Drive, Columbus, GA 31906

OBJECTIVES: To discover as much information possible of forebears of grandmother, MARTHA JANE (MATTIE) CHAPMAN, researching the lines of her father, JOHN FIELDS CHAPMAN and her mother, MARTHA JANE ALLEN and related families.

PROCEDURES: On July 24, 2000 at the Georgia Department of Archives and History, Atlanta, I began this assignment with the usual search into census records in order to place the families in their respective counties, and to see who were their neighbors. Starting with the earliest known, William M. Chapman, I proceeded to search all the census records during his lifetime, which of course, also showed the record of other direct members of the family, as his son, John Fields Chapman. To date, the census records 1840-1870 have been recorded for William M. Chapman and wife, Sarah C. (Lewis) Chapman. I located their marriage record and have enclosed a reader-printer copy for your files. I assumed you were lacking her maiden name as it didn't appear on the family chart you gave me. (As you see, they married in Greene County, Georgia 14 December 1837. Greene County, Georgia Marriage Register, 1829-1849, page 214. Microfilm 186-27.)

As it was not unusual for a newly-married girl to want to live near her mother, I believe the census record for 1840 enclosed is your William Chapman, age 20-30, wife same age. The 10-15 year old male living with them is probably a younger brother of one of them. In the neighborhood lives a Thomas Lewis, 20-30, as well as Henry Lewis, age 50-60, very possibly Sarah's father. I will pursue the Lewis family as well. (Federal Census 1840, Greene County, Georgia, page 32. Microfilm 331-18.)

By 1850, William and Sarah have moved over into Hancock County where William is employed as an overseer. They are the parents of five children and apparently they stopped. With that number, evidenced by later census records. (Of course, there could have been children who were born and died between census years.)

It's reasonable to assume that William worked for someone who lived fairly close by and who had enough "people" to warrant hiring an overseer. By comparing the 1850 census with the slave schedule of that same year and in 1860, I found four planters who could have been William's employer:

-Seaborn Lawrence, 90-100 slaves, included in personal property valued at $63,700.

-Carlisle P. Beaman, 90+ slaves, personal property valued at $60.000. Beaman was a member of the family and possibly son of the New Englander who came South about 1813 and became the minister of the well-know Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church near Sparta. His name was N.N. S. Beman, as it appears in the old records, which are on microfilm at the Archives. I wonder if your family attended church there since it was near to where they lived? Do you have any idea what denomination they were?

-Thomas C. Gaines, l00+ slaves. Did not appear in the 1860 census.

-Sylvanus Walker, 21 slaves. Did not appear in the 1860 census.

It would be interesting to know at which plantation William was employed. Unfortunately, the slave schedules don't name the overseers. And, I also wonder just how many slaves a planter had before he needed to hire an overseer. (Federal Census 1850, Hancock County, Georgia, page 10, Microfilm 331-43. /Georgia Slave Schedule, 1850, Hancock County. MF 331-62.)

By 1860 and through the 1870 census, William and his family are over in Putnam County , in District 308, near Eatonton. (Federal Census 1860, Putnam County, Georgia, page 427, MF 332-21 and Federal Census 1870, Putnam County, Georgia, page 56. MF 333-9.) In 1870, Sarah is missing from the family and has no doubt died. William, 58, is living with his two unmarried daughters, Nancy and Mary, to keep house; next door is son, Miles R., young wife, Mary, and year-old child. We don't know how old William was when he died so I plan to continue the census records and other county records searching for information on him.

As you are descended from John Fields Chapman, son of William and Sarah, I focused on him but I think it is important to record the census records for all the children, if possible.

John Fields Chapman, as you see, is included in the census records of his father unti11870, where he and wife Martha J. appear in Newton County, in or near Covington, in Subdivision 96. (Federal Census 1870, Newton County, Georgia, page 38. MF333-6.) The census taker came around on July 19 and your grandmother, Mattie, was born on November 1 st. Interestingly, right next door appears the family of James R. Allen, 61, and his family... an uncle of Martha J. perhaps? Also living near is the Early Allen family. The Allens will be pursued later. (Note: I did record the family of one John Allen, 35, in the 1850 census of Putnam County, 70th District, who might be Martha Jane's father. It all depends on her month of birth, if she came along after September 24th, the day the census taker came around. The youngest child, Charles, is 4 years old so it would fit for her to be born in that year. I don't think the John Allen, 21, in Newton County, living in the home of William and E. A. Montgomery, could be Martha Jane's father since she was born in 1850; and as he didn't appear to be married at that time, it would have been hard for him to get married and also have a child by the end of that year.)

I searched Frances Ingmire's typescripts for a marriage record for John Fields Chapman and wife, Martha Jane Allen; counties, Newton, Putnam, Hancock, Jasper, Walton, Baldwin and Morgan. I use them for clues to the originals. I'll check the original books on film. They must have married about 1868-69.

John Fields Chapman's 1905 obituary gave me a good clue to finding Confederate records on him. I pulled the Newton County, Georgia Confederate Roster, 1861-1865. MF 11-55, which included the Confederate Pension Roll, 1890-1912. Also, The Confederate Pension Applications, Newton County, Georgia. MF 275-37, which is always a goldmine of information on veterans. I made reader-printer copies of those pages for you. Did you have information on his service in the War?

He enlisted in Company I, 8th Georgia Regiment on August 25, 1861, in Greene County. Was taken prisoner at Richmond, March 1865 and was in prison in Washington, DC. Sometime during the War, his right arm was amputated at the elbow joint. (At least, he didn't have to be in prison for long as the war ended approximately a month later or less.) I can order his complete service record for you, including his medical record, from Washington, which would give more detail and no doubt tell where his surgery took place. It usually takes several months to get it.

In December 1903, when he applied for the pension, he stated his wife was 46 years old and that he had 3 minor children, ages 3, 6 and 13. A man by the name of J. W. Allen served as a witness for the application. The Ordinary attested to the fact that Allen was of "good character and worthy of credit and belief." This must have been someone in his first wife's family. I'll try to identify him.

It is interesting to see that he gave his date of birth as November 27, 1837. Yet all the census records consistently estimate his birth as taking place in 1842-43. His parents didn't marry until December, 1837, so I think he was just not thinking at the time. I still have to look at the 1900 census, which is the last one in which he'll appear.

Glenn, as I have agreed to continue searching all sorts of records for information on your family, I won't make a list of recommendations at this point. Those records include census, tax, estate, land, church, marriage and any other that may give detail on your family.

CHAPMAN-ALLEN 2

23 September 2000

PREPARED BY: Anita Clendinen Enquist, P. 0. Box 246, Warm Springs, GA 31830

PREPARED FOR: Glenn Vaughn, Jr., 1801 Elmwood Drive, Columbus, GA 31906

OBJECTIVES: To discover as much information possible of forebears of grandmother, MARTHA JANE (MATTIE) CHAPMAN, researching the lines of her father, JOHN FIELDS CHAPMAN and her mother, MARTHA JANE ALLEN and related families.

PROCEDURES: Continuing with research on the Allen family on 24 August 2000 (Georgia Archives, Atlanta), I began trying to locate the marriage of John Fields Chapman and wife, Martha Jane Allen. They married about 1868-1869, according to the birth of their first child, Martha Jane, who was born 01 November 1870. (The 1880 census shows her to be 10 years old.) The following records were searched without results:

NEWTON COUNTY, GEORGIA MARRIAGES, 1866-1871, indexed. MF 162-42.

NEWTON COUNTY, GEORGIA MARRIAGES, 1869-1874, indexed. (failed to note)

PUTNAM COUNTY, GEORGIA MARRIAGES, 1842-1868, BKS. E, F, indexed. MF 1-4.

PUTNAM COUNTY, GEORGIA MARRIAGES, 1869-1879, BKS. G, H, indexed. MF 1-5.

WALTON COUNTY, GEORGIA MARRIAGE LICENSES AND APPLICATIONS, 1820- 1937. Unbound. Alphabetically arranged. Camp, Francis G. Churchill, Jos. MF 314-54.

WALTON COUNTY, GEORGIA MARRIAGES, BOOK E, 1857-1879, indexed. MF128-10.

The only other county adjoining Newton and Walton that might produce a marriage record is Morgan and I will go back later and search. I later found evidence in the book, Wayfarers in Walton: A History of Walton County. Georgia. 1818-1967 by Anita B. Sams (Monroe, Georgia, The General Charitable Foundation, 967, Call #F292. W17S2), that an Allen family, which seems to connect to your Allens, lived in Morgan County before settling in Walton. A couple usually married in the bride's county and at this point her supposed father, John Allen, has not been identified. The counties searched are the general area where all these related families lived. Later, I'll be in a better position to pinpoint a more definite location. I made copies of the pages showing the Allen and Dial families, which you may already have

For future reference, I copied the index pages showing Allen, Dial and Thomason from Cemetery Readings Alphabetically. Walton County. Georgia (F292. W] 715), an index to the book In Remembrance. Cemetery Readings of Walton County, Georgia (Historical Society of Walton County, inc., 1981. F292.WI7I5). You may also be familiar with these books.

With the 1900 CENSUS OF NEWTON COUNTY, GEORGIA, MF335-33, I completed the census records of the family of John Fields Chapman and wife, Mattie (Allen) Chapman. They lived in the Brickstore District on 16 June, shown on page 17. Next door is the David R. Dial family, not identified as yet. And also living nearby with the Robert Brown family are: Jettie Allen, 16 and David Thomason, 18, cousin and nephew of Brown. I remember a Brown connection on one your group sheets. (Glenn, rather than recording each individual census family on a separate sheet, I think it's more helpful and interesting to you for me to record them as they appear on the census when they are neighbors or living nearby -also serving as a good clue to family relationship since families tended to settle near each other. It saves me time to just make copies of my original census notes.) This David R. Dial family is interesting... I wonder how he is related to David R. Allen, Frances Lucinda' s father! The names in these families just keep on re-appearing!

As you see, I filled in additional census records for William M. Chapman's children, one reason being, to locate William M. after 1870. As so often happened, I was hoping to find him living with one of his sons. Unless he died after that time, he's probably living somewhere in Putnam, but he didn't appear on the 1880 Soundex, for the simple reason that unless there were children under the age of 11 in the household, he would not be on that index. (I never have understood why the indexers of the 1880 census decided to arrange it that way...most inconvenient for us who need to ferret these people out!)

I located William R. Chapman and wife., Amanda., down in Sumter County, Georgia in 1880 after they lived in Putnam in 1870. I wonder why they left that area and went to Sumter. I didn't see anyone living near them I recognized. You probably know this already, he being your mother's great-uncle. (I have not done the later censuses for the siblings of John Fields Chapman and brother William R.) I was pleasantly surprised to stumble on the marriage record of William R. Chapman and Amanda Allen. She must be closely related to Martha Jane, possibly an older sister. They married in Greene County, 30 September 1859. (Discovered this in the typescript Greene County, Georgia Marriage Records, 1788-1875 by Frances Ingmire, 1985. To be absolutely certain of the exact date with no errors, it's best to look at the original on microfilm but that can be done later if you wish.) The immediate value of this record though, is Amanda's maiden name, Allen. It's possible she belongs to another Allen family but I doubt it.

In tracing your Chapman family, I wanted so much to find a father for William M., your earliest- known ancestor in that line. The earliest census record I found where I'm pretty sure of his identity, is the 1840 census of Greene County after his marriage to Sarah C. Lewis in Greene in 1837. (This record I included in your first Chapman-Allen and most recent report.) Their household had a young male 10-15 years old, probably a younger brother of either William or Sarah. Their first child had not arrived at this point in time and Lewis families are living nearby.

In the 1830 Census, Greene County, Georgia, MF331-8, was a Randle Chapman who looks to be a very promising candidate to be father of William M., for several interesting reasons:

1. There are two males 10-15 (born 1815-1820), right age for William M.

2. Not only are there Lewis families conveniently living in the neighbor hood but one named Lewis Fields...Fields as the last name. I wonder if the census taker got it backwards and it should be Fields Lewis. There is one Fields Lewis who was living in Greene County at the time of the 1805 Land Lottery, married, and drew two blanks., which means he was eligible to draw again in 1807. Although, not the same man as the neighbor of Randle Chapman in 1830...would had to have been an older Fields Lewis in 1805. My point in all this, as you have already figured out, is the possibility that your great-grandfather, John Fields Chapman, was named for this man, a relative on Sarah's side of the family. A brother, perhaps? If the census taker did get the name turned around. To make it more complicated, there does appear a man by the name of Thomas Fields living in Greene County in 1805 and participated in the 1805 Lottery. But either way, whoever this Lewis Fields or Fields Lewis is, he is still important to the family line.

3. Another reason for the possibility of the Randle Chapman connection, is the neighbor, Nancy Lewis, age 40-50 with a daughter? born by 1820, just the right age to be Sarah C. Lewis, future wife of William M. Chapman, who lived nearby in 1830.

There was only one other man living in that area who could have been the father of William M. Chapman (that is, unless the census taker missed someone), and that was one John Chapman, living in Putnam County in 1820 with a male in the household the right age to be William M.; a possibility, of course. But the Greene County family of Randle Chapman in 1830 more closely fits with what we already know to be fact. The given name, Randle, doesn't seem to be passed down through your family but that may be because they simply didn't care for it. Greene County records are good so I can follow up on this later if you wish.

By the way, I did find another interesting fact in looking at the 1805 Land Lottery book, which might provide more clues to this family later: one Randel Chapman, under 21, and said to be an "orphan under the care of Jno. Mapp", drew a blank in that lottery... lived in Greene County. That means he would have been born 1774-1805 and fits the same age group as Randle Chapman. head of house in 1830, above.

I also recorded an Allen Chapman (interesting combination!), age 20-30, living in Putnam County in 1830, very possibly a son of John Chapman of the 1820 Putnam County census above. All of these were the only ones on the indexes during those years in Greene and Putnam. I noted that there were no Chapman's recorded in Greene County in 1820, whatever the reason.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

1. Follow clues to the Randle Chapman family, of Greene County, Georgia, as discussed above.

2. Try to discover the identity of John Allen, supposed father of Martha Jane Allen. Which John was he? Is this Allen family related to the family of Frances Lucinda Allen?...another grandmother of Sallie Thomason Vaughn.

According to the school records of Clerk E. Wook, a 3-month term beginning in May, 1881, was to be taught at Nels Larsen's house. Rental of $2.00 per month for the use of his house was to be paid.

The first school was constructed in 1882 on the NE 1/4 of Section 30, Blinsmon Township, on land donated by Simonsen. Cost of the building was $400. Hattie Loucks was hired to teach a 3-month term commencing on Oct. 10, 1882, at $20.00 per month. This small building served the district well for the next 2 years with a few improvements being made as needed. A 16X24 stable was added and a well was dug.

By 1916 the school term had gradually increased to 9 months. Teachers' salaries jumped to a new high of $90 per month in 1919, but later dropped considerably during the depression years of the early 1930's.

In 1924 a new school was built in the northwest corner of NW 1/4 of Section 32, one half mile south on the hill overlooking Sioux Valley toward Trent. This building, with its basement, furnace, and indoor toilets (chemical), was in use for 22 years before it became a casualty of consolidating schools.

The last group of 12 pupils attending the Nelson School before its door was closed was taught by Gladys Pettit in 1945-46. Since then the children of the district have been bused to Trent or Dell Rapids.

No trace of the building remain. The original schoolhouse served as living quarters briefly before it was moved to the Jack Gill Farm where one part was used again as housing and the other section as a garage or shop. The newer school, sold to Dave Nelson who farmed the surrounding land, remained on the hilltop about 30 years before it was finally razed.

NELSON CEMETERY

On a hillside looking across the Big Sioux River four miles Southeast of Trent, South Dakota lays a small well-kept cemetery. This plot of land, located near the Southwest Corner of the SW 1/4 of Section 29 of Blinsmon Township, was donated by pioneer Nels Nelson for a burial ground. In the spring of 1886, Maria, wife of Otto Nelson (brother of Nels), died and was buried there. Hers is the first recorded grave in the cemetery. Over thirty family members and neighbors of the Nelsons now lie there. Included among them is Francis F. Anderson, A World War II Casualty, after whom the Trent American Legion Hjelman-Anderson Post No. 122 was named.

The distinctive gate posts of the cemetery were constructed of native stones by Nels Anderson and his sons, Alvin and Francis.

Many trees have been planted around the cemetery. The Caretakers have been descendants of Nels Nelson, children and grandchildren.

Marriage Notes for PRENTIS OLLIS and LORAINE NELSON:

We met in November 1950 in Rapid City, South Dakota. I had gone roller skating with a friend, Bob Fischer, who met a Girl at the roller rink. Bob, took Bonnie home and I rode along. At Bonnie's apartment I met Loraine. She had just gotten out of bed and getting ready to go to work, as a registered nurse she was working the 11pm - 7 am shift in the local hospital. I drove her to work, which was about 6-8 blocks away. I tried to establish a date during this short drive, but was unable, since Loraine was engaged to a fellow back in Eastern South Dakota. I was semi engaged to a girl back in Georgia, but my girl fried did not have a ring as Loraine did. Via telephone I was finally able to get a date with Loraine and it developed into almost a nightly affair. so we had a very short courtship and got married on February 14, 1951.
