Hi. I saw your great website on William M. Chapman. I believe he was the son of Randal Chapman of Greene Co., GA. In Randal's will, dated 7 Oct. 1836, Rec: 24 Dec. 1836, he named his son William Marion Chapman. He mentioned other children but did not name them.

Let me know if you're interested in learning more.

Sincerely,
Rhoda

Hi Prentis. I am glad to share whatever I can. Right now I'm pretty tied up with grandkids but they will be leaving soon so I'll have more time. The Randal Chapman line is not mine but we believe that he was the younger brother of my ancestor, Thomas Chapman. Thomas was the son of John Chapman who d. in Abbeville Dist., SC about 1803. John Chapman did not leave a will but there are a number of estate records in Abbeville Dist. and Randal Chapman received his share which was equal to that of the others. But so far we have not found absolute proof that he was the same Randal who appears in Greene Co., GA. As you know, the 1805 Lottery shows that John Mapp was the guardian of Randal Chapman. This is a puzzle in many ways because Randal had grown brothers, one of whom was married and could have taken him in. But one thing that really convinces me that Randal son of John Chapman and Randal of Greene Co. are the same is the fact that in John's estate records there is a very careful accounting of money spent by the Admins. There are several entries for schooling for the other two minor sons, John, jr. and Thomas, but none for Randal. Also miscellaneous expenses for the other two but none for Randal. That indicates to me that Randal was living with someone -
somewhere other than Abbeville.

I'm sorry - I'm rambling and getting ahead of myself by talking about this so early on. Hope it does't cause a lot of confusion. Anyhow, I do have information on Randal Chapman of Greene Co. and his children which I will send soon. For starters, I am attaching the will of Mary Mapp who was wife of John Mapp mentioned above. It appears from this will that the Mapps had no children of their own for Mary only mentions the children of Randal and her own brothers and sisters. William M. Chapman in not mentioned in Mary Mapp's will and I suspect he had moved away by this time. I do not find him listed in the 1850 census in Greene Co.

More later,

Rhoda

Hello.  First let me compliment you on a truly fantastic website.  It has been some time since I last visited it and am amazed at how much you have done to it.  Second, can you give me any information about the picture that appears on your home page taken in 1837?  I am interested in knowing the context of the picture.....e.g. family reunion???  I assume William M. and Sarah are in the picture although they don't seem to be identified.  If this is a family reunion, it is likely that John M. is in it.

I have written to you twice before, hoping to collaborate, but have never received a reply.  My interest in William M. is that I believe him to be the brother, possibly twin brother, of my g-g-grandfather, John M. Chapman.  John M. is definitely connected to the family of John Chapman of Abbeville SC, whose sons migrated to GA after their father's death in 1803.  John M. was born in GA in 1816 (the same as Wm. M. and thus the basis of my thought that they might be twins) and was left one third of the estate of Mary Mapp who is so closely aligned with Randal Chapman's family.  Both Wm. M. and John M. were overseers.  Both were overseers in Hancock County, although perhaps not at the same time. (Wm. is listed in the 1850 and John M. is there in 1860.)  I think I may have even determined the plantation John M. worked on.  Both were married in Greene Co. in 1837, Wm. M. to Sarah Lewis, and John M. to Martha Crews, his first wife.  He married my g-g-grandmother, Sarah E. Jones, in Greene Co. in 1855.  John M. was struck by lightening and died in 1868 in Hancock Co. but his family then moved back to Greene Co.

The only other possibilty for John M.'s father is Randal's brother John.  Unfortunately, out of the five sons who moved to GA from SC, John is the only one about whom I can find absolutely nothing and that is all that keeps him from being eliminated as a possibility.   By virtue of being named to a third of Mary Mapp's estate, I am inclined to think he would be in Randal's family.  I am planning to hire the same researcher you used for the report included in the website since she is already quite familiar with the family.  I have a lot of data about John M. and would be able to trace him back to Halifax Co. VA and the Revolution if only I could ascertain who his father was.

Again, it is a great website.  I would be very interested in knowing the circumstances of the picture if you know them.  I assume that since William's and Sarah's names do not appear, that you have not been able to identify them.  John and William would have been 21 in 1837 so there are few possibilities.

Sincerely,

Susan Chapman Babb

Subject: RE: Chapman Genealogy- Randal, son of John, son of Nathan

With great interest I located your correspondence with RhodaFone on the internet.

We are researching our same Chapman ancestors.  I have good records on John Chapman,  Sargent,Minute Man, American Rev. who migrated to SC, Dist. 96 from Halifax Co Va.. I located all of his estate records at the Abbeville Court House in Box 19, Pack 398 and made photo copies of  same which I am most happy to share.   With these documented records, I qualified to join  Sons Of The American Rev. a while back.

The last docoment in the file was a paper signed by Nathan Chapman & Benjamin Chapman, my 3 gr grand father ,where Randal was awarded his Legaacy, 30 May 1812.

John received a land grant in Wiles Co ,Ga where he lived for a while giving this land to his sons and returning to SC.   Have good records on most of his sons from research done for Dr Guy Well by Leonardo Andrea .a professional genealogist of Columbia,SC , on file at the Univ of SC Archives  Also have photo  copies of these records .     This research  was done for Dr Wells back in 1938 when he was president of Georgia State College at Milledgeville, Ga  Dr Wells ,whom I never met  was a 2nd cousin of  my father

Enough information for this time...I have volumes in my Chapman Genealogy files.I will gladly share.

Sincerely.

P S The Chapman Familey Assoc is  having  their annual meeting  in Richmond Va. May 16-18  which I plan to attend.   Last year it was in Salt Lake City, Utah which was great.
You probably know that Nathan & Benjamin married Hart sister.  Have records on
Lt Samuel Hart,  Amer Rev., their  father.

Delighted at receiving  such a quick response to my E-Mail.
Now that I have your address, I will go to the copy shop next week and make copies of John Chapman Estate Papers from Box 19, Pack 398 I  located a number of years ago on a trip to Abeville.  I also have a photo  copy for the document  where he was awarded 280 acres  in District 96 adjoining the Reedy River from the original on file at SC Archives in Columbia which I'll send to you.

Are you  aquainted with Dr Wells and Leonardo Andrea papers ?  Dr Wells. mother was a Chapman.  He traced  Bemjanin Chapman migration to De Kalb Co around 180l or 1823 when Benjamin cut logs and help establish the Macedonia Baptist Church on Panola Rd. which is now Lithonia,Ga.  He & his wife Phebe Hart  are burried.in the church cemetery. When the old log chruch was dismanteled  he acqiuired  logs and moved them to his farm where he later retired to.  His grandson Guy Well, III varified this and sent me a photo copy of his manucsript which  was published in  A.D R book ar ound 1938 , . which  we  first located at the Ga State Archives down near thee State Capitol. The Archives   is in the process of being relocated to another site and may be reopened by now ?
.

Your Chapman Genealogy  research records, picked up from Google is well presented, most professional looking I might add.   I need to solicit  your aid in getting my boxes of information better organized.

Much of the data we acquired  from Abbeville and Halifax Co. Court House in Va. I sent to Rhoda Fone including a hand-written copy of Nathan Will which lists his children.  However the mystrey rremains to the identify of his  wife and when they settled in Haalifax Co. and where they came from ?  There I hit a dead end

On our trip to Richmond in May for the Chapman Assoc. Meeting, I hope to find something on him there.  They also have a copy of his Will which my wife located when she and her cousin were attending a meeting and researching   her  family. Their time was limited , so her visit  was spent  on her family roots.

Didn't mean for this letter to get so long. Please excuse.

Kindest Rregards & Good Searching,
Bill

I was away from it for about a year due to health problems. Now I need to get back to work.
