1. JOHN M.1 CHAPMAN was born Abt. 1816 in Georgia, and died 1868 in Hancock County GA. He married (1) MARTHA H. CREWS January 01, 1838 in Green County, Georgia. She was born in Georgia. He married (2) SARAH (SALLY) E. JONES May 27, 1855 in Greene Co. GA. She was born Abt. 1840, and died Abt. 1890 in Greene Co. GA.

Notes for JOHN M. CHAPMAN:

In the 1850 Greene County Census (USGenweb) his occupation is listed as Overseer. By the time of the 1860 census, he was an overseer in neighboring Hancock County. John M. Chapman died in 1868, after being struck by lightening. His youngest child, Maria, was only a baby at the time. As of December 2002, I have not been able to establish the father of John M. Chapman. It is most likely that he is the son of Randal Chapman, b. about 1791 in Abbeville Co., South Carolina (son of John Chapman of Halifax Co., Virginia and later Abbeville Co., South Carolina). I continue to work on finding the parents of John M. Chapman.

Notes for MARTHA H. CREWS:

Familysearch.org...genealogy website of the Church of Latter day Saints shows Martha's birthdate as 1827. The same record shows the marriage date of Martha and John as 1838 and this marriage date is confirmed by the Greene County Marriage Records (US. Genweb). All of this means that Martha would have been 11 years old when she married John M. Chapman so I continue to search for a correct birth year for Martha. What happened to Martha and her children is unknown. John was married to Sarah Jones five years after this census. Mary and Henrietta were not raised by John and Sarah so it is likely that they either went to maternal relatives after Martha's death or that the marriage ended by divorce and they stayed with their mother.

Green County Marriage Records (pg. 516) show that John and Martha were married by Ephraim Bruce.

Notes for HENRIETTA C. CHAPMAN:

"Hernitta" is the name listed in transcripts of the 1850 census. LDS records also show her name as Hernitta. After viewing a copy of the actual 1850 census, I am certain that her name was actually Henrietta, which was a fairly popular name at the time. It is my conclusion that "Hernitta" is a transcription error that was passed on to the LDS Family History Center. The source of the LDS records has not been determined as of 4/2/2001.

2. WILLIAM TALLY2 CHAPMAN (JOHN M.1) was born April 1856 in Georgia, and died 1907 in Greene Co., GA. He married (1) ANNA LUNDY January 11, 1876. He married (2) MARYALICE ELIZABETH GENTRY March 14, 1884. She was born August 21, 1853, and died April 24, 1937.

Notes for WILLIAM TALLY CHAPMAN:

Family tradition states that William died in an epidemic and is buried in an unmarked grave at the Liberty Methodist Church in Greene Co. GA. No record of his death or burial is found in either the E.H. Armor's Cemeteries of Greene County Georgia or the Liberty Methodist Church records. Census records show that William lived in Greene Co. all of his life, settling in the Liberty area as an adult. He was separated from his second wife "Lizzy" at the time of his death. Occupation is listed as farmer in the census records. Aside from census records, all data on William Tally Chapman and his descendants comes from his great-granddaughter, Dianne Chapman Whiddon. Dianne credits John Gentry with the data on William T.'s marriages.

Notes for THADDEUS MONTGOMERY CHAPMAN:

About 1912, Thaddeus suffered a stroke and was later committed to the State Hospital in Milledgeville as a result of that stroke. He remained at the hospital until his death in 1934. Much information has been recieved about Thaddeus from hospital records.

Aunt Hattie (Chapman) and Uncle Wade (Barnhart), whom we stayed with whenever we visited GA in my youth.  They had a beautiful Cape Cod style home on Greensboro Rd. in Greensboro.  Hattie Chapman, 1895-1963, is the daughter of Thaddeus and Nettie Chapman, granddaughter of John M. Chapman.  Hattie and Wade are buried in Penfield Cemetery.

Aunt Hattie and Uncle Wade were two of the nicest people anyone would ever want to know. Their warmth, kindness, and true southern hospitality will never be forgotten by those who received it. Forty years after the fact, we still marvel at the breakfasts Aunt Hattie used to cook, including fried chicken, eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries, and of course grits. Uncle Wade was a carpenter by trade. He was soft spoken with an easy smile. No one ever doubted that he was crazy about Aunt Hattie.

Notes for MATTIE CHAPMAN:

E.H. Armor's Cemeteries of Greene County shows that Mattie is buried with her parents at the Penfield Cemetery. Her gravestone shows that she was born August 18,1892. This is not possible if her brother Henry Grady was born February 21, 1892 as is recorded on all his official records. Date given here is from AnnaLee Anderson. Mr. Armor's records show her as Mattie Moore, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T.M. Chapman, but the name listed is Mattie Moore so she would have to have been married. If born in 1896, she would only have been 17 at the time of her death.

Lily Maude Chapman and her husband Joseph Mullins, both of Penfield, GA.  Maude, as she was called, was born 1888, the third daughter of Thaddeus M. Chapman and Sarah Henrietta (Nettie) Woodham.  Maude and Joe moved to Ohio in the 1920's and to Southgate CA in the 1940's.

 

Aunt Maude and Uncle Joe celebrating a major wedding anniversary......probably 50th.....around 1965. This is the way they looked when I knew them.

Henry Grady Chapman


Henry Grady Chapman in his Model T with other family members.  The young boy in the back is my father, Charles Henry Chapman.  His mother, Famah Carson Chapman is to his left.  the two women on the outside are probably Grandpa's sisters but we don't know which ones.  Henry and Famah had moved to Akron to seek work in the rubber factories but Grandpa didn't like that at all and they went back to Penfield about 1924.  Less than a year later they moved back to Akron where they stayed the rest of their lives.

Occupation : self-employed house painter; Was the first of his family to move (about 1917) to the Akron, Ohio area where he remained the rest of his life. Some of the addresses for this family after moving to Akron included: 891 Sherman, 834 Sherman (corner of Sherman and Jewel Ct., upstairs) 824 Beardsley and 839 Allyn St. where Henry lived from about 1934 until his death in 1957.
