Dakota.
NELSON SCHOOL DISTRICT
No. 41
According to the school records of Clerk E. Wook, a 3-month term beginning in
May, 1881, was to be taught at Nels Larsen's house. Rental of $2.00 per month
for the use of his house was to be paid.
The first school was constructed in 1882 on the NE 1/4 of Section 30,
Blinsmon Township, on land donated by Simonsen. Cost of the building was $400.
Hattie Loucks was hired to teach a 3-month term commencing on Oct. 10, 1882, at
$20.00 per month. This small building served the district well for the next 2
years with a few improvements being made as needed. A 16X24 stable was added and
a well was dug.
By 1916 the school term had gradually increased to 9 months. Teachers'
salaries jumped to a new high of $90 per month in 1919, but later dropped
considerably during the depression years of the early 1930's.
In 1924 a new school was built in the northwest corner of NW 1/4 of Section
32, one half mile south on the hill overlooking Sioux Valley toward Trent. This
building, with its basement, furnace, and indoor toilets (chemical), was in use
for 22 years before it became a casualty of consolidating schools.
The last group of 12 pupils attending the Nelson School before its door was
closed was taught by Gladys Pettit in 1945-46. Since then the children of the
district have been bused to Trent or Dell Rapids.
No trace of the building remain. The original schoolhouse served as living
quarters briefly before it was moved to the Jack Gill Farm where one part was
used again as housing and the other section as a garage or shop. The newer
school, sold to Dave Nelson who farmed the surrounding land, remained on the
hilltop about 30 years before it was finally razed.

NELSON CEMETERY
On a hillside looking across the Big Sioux River four miles Southeast of
Trent, South Dakota lays a small well-kept cemetery. This plot of land, located
near the Southwest Corner of the SW 1/4 of Section 29 of Blinsmon Township, was
donated by pioneer Nels Nelson for a burial ground. In the spring of 1886,
Maria, wife of Otto Nelson (brother of Nels), died and was buried there. Hers is
the first recorded grave in the cemetery. Over thirty family members and
neighbors of the Nelsons now lie there. Included among them is Francis F.
Anderson, A World War II Casualty, after whom the Trent American Legion Hjelman-Anderson
Post No. 122 was named.
The distinctive gate posts of the cemetery were constructed of native stones
by Nels Anderson and his sons, Alvin and Francis.
Many trees have been planted around the cemetery. The Caretakers have been
descendants of Nels Nelson, children and grandchildren.

Marriage Notes for P RENTIS
OLLIS
and LORAINE
NELSON:
We met in November 1950 in Rapid City, South Dakota. I had gone roller
skating with a friend, Bob Fischer, who met a Girl at the roller rink. Bob, took
Bonnie home and I rode along. At Bonnie's apartment I met Loraine. She had just
gotten out of bed and getting ready to go to work, as a registered nurse she was
working the 11pm - 7 am shift in the local hospital. I drove her to work, which
was about 6-8 blocks away. I tried to establish a date during this short drive,
but was unable, since Loraine was engaged to a fellow back in Eastern South
Dakota. I was semi engaged to a girl back in Georgia, but my girl fried did not
have a ring as Loraine did. Via telephone I was finally able to get a date with
Loraine and it developed into almost a nightly affair. so we had a very short
courtship and got married on February 14, 1951.
