N O T E S

Document VvS 447-18 Staat 10 Oct 1790) VvS stands for Vrije van Sluis -- a term which refers to the rural villages around Sluis not including places which had their own local government such as Oostburg) and 447 is the archive number of the document.

(guardian from father's side) Jacob de la Haije Bewester Eede. Batig slot £ 220.12.6.

Gijselkamer may mean like a debtor's prison, that was located in Sluis. The last line "batig slot" and the monetary value I think means that when everything was inventoried there was a positive balance of that much money so apparently Joannes did have some possessions of material value.

"Bewerking Weeskamer Oostburg" - 1445-25 Staat 2 April 1791 (1445 refers to the RAZV # [Rijks Archief Zeeuws Vlaanderen] - document 25 -- and the date of the document) overleden Oostburg 2 Dec 1789 Cornelia de Badts, weduwe van Boudewijn van de Woestijne and it lists their children and spouses among whom are the children of a deceased son Jan van de Woestijne and his wife Elisabeth Danekens, namely, Cornelia 14, Boudewijn 8, Jacob 7, Jannis 6, Isaac 2, Samuel 5 months. This agrees reasonably well with the record above although there are some small differences in the children's ages.

Oostburg Burial Records – FHL Film #122,269 - burial # 35 in 1789 Cornelia de Bats laast weduwe van Boudewijn van de Woestijne (meaning she had a husband before Boudewijn) born in the Noordpolder and living at Oostburg aged 81 years, 4 months, and 25 days. Died 10 Dec and buried at Oostburg 15 Dec 1789 Using 10 Dec as the death date and the age, she was born about 10 Aug 1708.

Boudewijn van de Woestijne husband of Cornelia de Bats born and living at Oostburg died 3 Feb and buried 8 Feb 1785 (burial #5 in 1785). He was 82 years and 28 days old so he was born about 6 Jan 1703. I think he was married first to Jacomijntje de Die who died at Oostburg 24 Sep 1732 as the wife of Boudewijn van de Woestijne aged 28 leaving 4 children by him.

Er zijn totaal 5 kinderen (there were 5 children in all). Erft ook (also inherited): Pieter Cause. Batig slot £ 31.16.4."

Neeltje and Samuel may be the parents of Boudewijn. Pieter Cause (probably Kusse or Cusse) is probably the second husband of Jozijntje van de Woestijne who died in 1723 and I think was a sister to Isaac, Jan and Boudewijn mentioned above.

Oostburg Burials - #1713 - Maatje Beukels died 16 Aug/bur 19 Aug 1752. It says she was wife of Jan van Schaffel d'oude; that she was born in Cadzand and was 64 and 1/2 years so she was born about mid February 1688. The record also notes she left a married daughter, a son, and daughter's children.

In the Bewerking Weeskamer Oostburg Bram has her death date as 16 Aug 1842 which is clearly an error (RAZV 1439, vol 1, document 1 dated 12 May 1753) and notes she married 4 times. m1 ____ de Bat (by whom had Cornelia who married Boudewijn van de Woestijne. She is likely the married daughter referred to the the burial record. m2 ____ Steur by whom she had Abraham (son mentioned in the burial record); also a deceased daughter Jakoba Steur who married Jacob van Male and had a child (daughter's children mentioned in Maatje's burial record).
m3 ______ Hennequin by whom she had Janneken who m. Isaac Maas and Pieter Teerling. Janneken left children by both husbands (daughter's children mentioned in Maatje's burial record). m4 Jan van Schaffel to whom she was married when she died.

Mabelis entry in the Oostbug burials - may turn out to be connected in time - Mabelis is not a very common name in Zeeland. Adriaan Mabelis died 23 Feb/bur 25 Feb 1773 (burial #719) laast weduwe van Jacoba Marote (meaning he had been married before to someone else); b. Maldegem (which is in the Flemish portion of Belgium) and lived at Oostburg aged 86 years 11 1/2 months.

Guardians are usually relatives. Another document in the same Book VvS 431-I-6 Staat 19 July 1782 mentions one Jacob de la Haije who died in Beweste Eede benoorden St. Pietersdijk 6 Jun 1782 as the husband of Maria van de Woestijne d.v. (daughter of ) Boudewijn and thus a sister to Joannis who died in 1790). Since Jacob de la Haije had died in 1782 (if this extract is correct), he cannot be the paternal guardian mentioned above. Perhaps the guardian Jacob de la Haije was a son of this couple and hence a cousin to the children of Joannes van de Woestijne. Jacob and Maria did have a son Jacob de la Haije who was 25 by 19 Jul 1782 and he lived in Bewester Eede so this is a reasonable hypothesis.
