... 10Jul1999 ... William PUGH. No known dates. He was in
Nansemond County, Virginia during the Revolutionary War
-- hid provisions on his farm and was burned out. One
known son, Henry Pugh of Gates County, North Carolina,
married to Ann Riddick, and died ca: 1824. Can you tie
William to any family in Nansemond County, Virginia? Any
clues will be greatly appreciated.

... 21Jul1999 ... Devaney, Lucy PUGH b: 20 Nov
1833 in Franklin County, North Carolina, was my gg
grandmother. She was one of two, out of nine, children
with the PUGH middle name -- her next oldest brother was
Francis PUGH Devaney (b: 1828). Her parents were Aaron
Devaney and Wilmouth Fawn. Pugh is not a family name for
the Devaney or Fawn line -- we have lineage back several
generations.
.....If there is a
connection to the PUGH family, it must be on the Devaney
side somewhere around the 1800-1820's era. We do know
that Aaron Devaney witnessed the will of a Martha Davison
PUGH, apparently the wife of a FRANCIS PUGH (there are,
unfortunately, a lot of them!) in Franklin Co. NC in 1821,
indicating some connection. I've had no luck in trying to
find some record of a marriage between the PUGHs and the
Devaneys that would warrant giving two children born in
1828 and 1833 the middle name of PUGH. This is a bit
complicated to follow. Would love to hear from anyone who
might know something about this.

... 17Aug1999 ... Jesse PUGH; m: Hannah Bales
.....Child of Jesse
Pugh and Hannah Bales was: Jesse Pugh; m: Elizabeth(?)
Gray/Grey(?)
.....Children of
Jesse Pugh and Elizabeth(?) Gray/Grey(?) were: Abel Pugh;
m: Rachel Lambert(?) 04Dec1806 in Warren County, Ohio ...
Benjamin ... William ... Jesse.
.....Child of Abel
Pugh and Rachel Lambert(?) was: Josias L. Pugh; m: Hannah
Adamson 12Aug1830 in Wayne County, Indiana.
.....Child of
Josias L. Pugh and Hannah Adamson was: Ervin M. Pugh b:
Ohio; m1: Catherine Rinehart, had a number of children; m2:
Susan Emily Coon (much younger).
.....The 4 Children
of Ervin M. Pugh and Susan Emily Coon included my
Grandmother, Effie Viola Pugh, born 1880, Wabash Co.
Indiana.
.....Abel Benjamin
William and Jesse were, according to some CLDS
submissions to the Ancestry file, sons of Jesse Pugh, son
of your Azariah Pugh and Hannah Bales. However the
submitter doesn't remember where she got that information.
.....A Roger Family
Home Page says Abel came from England about 1760. This
conflicts with the above Quaker line back through Ellis
Pugh and Sina. However, the Rogers were and old and
wealth family in Wabash County, and the lines they define
from Abel and Jesse down coincide with mine.
.....If you happen
to have any information which would shed some light on
the above I would certainly appreciate it.

... 30Dec1999 ... Joel PUGH -- b. about 1794, possibly in
KY; d. 1830 in Mississippi. Members of at least three
generations of my family have been searching without
success for the origins of Joel PUGH/PEW, who was
described in the History of Hickman Co. [Tennessee] by
Spence and Spence (1900) as being "from Kentucky."
That is our only clue about where he came from. (I wonder
if his move to Tennessee was related to the "Great
Revival" of that period, which was prominent in the
Shady Grove area as well as in Bourbon Co., KY.) He was
reported to have died at age 36 in Hinds Co.,
Mississippi, in 1830, cause unknown. (Since Hinds County,
Mississippi, and Hickman County, Tennessee, are both on
the Natchez Trace, I wonder if he was on a trip to
Natchez or New Orleans when he died.)
.. Joel PUGH settled about 1810 in Shady Grove (Hickman
Co.), TN, in the midst of new settlers, many from
Virginia and Kentucky. He was a "millwright and wood-workman."
Joel was a private in the War of 1812, fighting with many
other Tennesseans in the bloody Fort William engagement.
.....About 1810 he married Prudence "Jane"
NICKS, who was born in Guilford Co., NC, in 1794 and
moved to Shady Grove about 1805, when she was 11, with
her parents, George NICKS and Jean ANDERSON NICKS, and
siblings. Because she moved to Tennessee at such a young
age, I assume that she first met Joel at some time after
her arrival there.
.. Children of Joel and Jane (had at least seven):
George Roddy ... Sarah Emily ... Jane Amanda ... John W.
... Mary Melissa ... Margaret Etta ... Samuel.
.. A David PEW and a Joel PEW, both heads of
households, were listed in Hickman County, Tennessee, in the
1820 Census.
.. Any clues about the parents of Joel PUGH will be
very much appreciated.
