Perhaps the reader may be interested in how I have approached the research, compilation, and presentation of the information I have on my Northington lineage. Therefore, I am presenting the introduction chapter in my report. To make sure that I leave some record on what I have found, I have prepared a report with the information on hand, distributed copies, and constantly revise as I get additional information.

No, I am not going to bore you with the entire report. This posting will be a brief from the report prepared from the materials collected, and will be limited to those persons no longer living. For those interested, the report itself contains information on many individuals up to those born in 1998.

The report will also contain information and speculations on Northingtons in America back to 1620 in Virginia.

The report will also contain many collateral Northington ancestors and contemporaries.

THE NORTHINGTONS OF AUTAUGA COUNTY, ALABAMA
WHO THEY ARE AND
WHERE THEY CAME FROM

INTRODUCTION

The NORTHINGTON family in America dates back to the early 1600s in Virginia. By some accounts, we may date back to 1620 when an Edward Norrington came into Virginia as an indentured servant. This information is contained in COMPLETE BOOK OF IMMIGRANTS, 1607 - 1660, by Peter Coldham. Page 19 list Edward Norrington among those arriving in Virginia from Newgate on 26 February 1620.

There are some accounts in WFT that says that Edward Norrington(Northington), born in Virginia, and wife Lydia were the parents of Holtzclaw's Samuel(1). If this Edward Norrington was born in America, he was unlikely to have been the first Northington in America. His father most likely preceded him, and was quite likely to have been the Edward Norrington who arrived in Virginia in 1620. It is also of interest to note that most information on the subject states that Samuel(1) in this report was born in England and came to Virginia about 1681. This information, plus speculation on my part, indicates that Samuel (1) is quite likely to actually be Samuel(3).

Never-the-less, a great account is available in the section titled "NORTHINGTON" by Dr. Benjamin C. Holtzclaw, on pages 153 to 157 in the book HISTORICAL SOUTHERN FAMILIES, Vol. 3 by John Bennett Boddie 1959. Dr. Holtzclaw was born about 1894 and was still living in Richmond, Virginia in 1974. He was a descendant of Samuel(1) Northington, through Samuel(2) Northington, through Nathan(3) Northington and wife Rebecca Chappell Northington, through their daughter Anne Northington, born February 5, 1765, who married Joel Newsom about 1781-82.

(NOTE: the first known generation of NORTHINGTONS in America is labeled (1), the second generation is labeled (2), etc., as labeled by Holtzclaw.)

Top of Page

Dr. Holtzclaw, in his opening paragraph states "The name NORTHINGTON was pronounced and frequently spelled NORRINGTON in the early days. The Virginia family was probably an offshoot of an English family of NORWENTON, whose arms were: Argent a Saltyre Gules."

The section on NORTHINGTON by Benjamin C. Holtzclaw is reproduced in the full report.

From a distillation of Holtzclaw's writings, the conclusion is drawn that if the Prattville, Alabama Northingtons came from Virginia as thought, they would likely be descended from Nathan Northington and his wife Rebecca Chappell Northington, the same line of descent as Dr. Holtzclaw at that point.

Analysis of Dr. Holtzclaw's report shows that Samuel (2) Northington only had four children: Samuel(3), Nathan(3), John(3)and Ann. John(3) died young without issue. Samuel(3) with his seven children moved to North Carolina, with descendants scattering to Kentucky, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas, thus accounting for many of the Northingtons in Texas as shown in a document written by Seth Darnaby Breeding, Sr. in December 1975. Mr. Breeding's wife was a descendant from Samuel(3) Northington.

Nathan(3) Northington with his eleven children remained in Virginia, except that daughter Ann(4) and husband Joel Newsom and her brother James(4), moved to Georgia in 1843. Of Nathan(3)

Northington's eleven children only four sons were likely ancestors of the Prattville, Alabama Northingtons. Jabez(4), Nathan(4), John(4), and Samuel(4) are the only ones left as James(4) move with his sister Ann(4) to Georgia, and Elijah(4) died young with out issue.

Evidence that the Prattville, Alabama Northingtons descended from Nathan(3) was confirmed by records located in Alabama, and records from Virginia federal census. 1855 and 1860 Alabama census records show that William H. Northington, Thomas Reeks Northington and G. A. Northington all born in Virginia, were living in Autauga County, Alabama with their families. Other records and documents indicate that Thomas Reeks Northington, William H. Northington and Gustavus Adolphus Northington were sons of John Wilfred Stewart (Stuart) Northington and Mary Hill Reeks. Virginia Census Records for 1850 and information found in Alabama show that Argyra Atillia Northington and Martha Elizabeth H. Northington were daughters of John Wilfred Stewart Northington and Mary Hill Reeks.

Top of Page

An Application for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution, and its validation shows that John Wilfred Stewart Northington and Mary Hill Reeks were the parents of Thomas Reeks Northington, and that John Wilfred Stewart Northington was the son of Nathan Northington and Ann Stewart(Stuart) Northington. Ann Stewart was the daughter of Richard Stewart (Sturd in the list of soldiers for his company), who fought in the American Revolution.

Holtzclaw showed that Nathan Northington, great grandson of the First Samuel Northington, had a son named Nathan Northington who married Ann Stewart. The dates on the application for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution closely matched those in Holtzclaw's writings.

There may still be other Northington families who did not evolve from Samuel(1) Northington , since Dr. Holtzclaw refers to a John Northington and a Captain William Northington, both seeming to be of the same generation as Samuel(1). Nothing else is shown about any descendants of John Northington and Captain William Northington. Remember too that many genealogical historians only look for and recorded information that traces certain descendants.

Dr. Holtzclaw also referred to a Edward Norrington and wife Lydia who may have been the parents of Samuel(1) Northington. Question, did Edward Norrington have any other sons? Recent information indicates that Edward and Lydia were likely the parents of Samuel(1) and that he was born in England and came to Virginia about 1691or 1681.This would mean that Edward and Lydia, who was shown to have been in Virginia around the end of the 1660s, must have gone back to England or at least Lydia did. This information, if correct, would mean that Samuel(1) is actually Samuel (2) or possibly(3) if the Edward Norrington , who came to Virginia turns out to be the father of the Edward that married Lydia. Well, let us see how this pans out.

The report on the Northingtons of Autauga County, Alabama is presented in three parts. PART 1 will address Thomas Reeks Northington and his descendants. PART II will address William H. Northington and his descendants. Part III will address G. A. Northington, Argyra Atillia Northington, Martha Elizabeth H. Northington and their descendants.

Some information given in the book "GOLSAN, GOLSON, GHOLSON, GHOLSTON FAMILIES OF AMERICA" regarding the parentage of William H., Argyra Atillia, and Martha Elizabeth H. Northington is judged to be slightly incorrect in that the book lists their parents as John L. Northington and their mother as Mary Rex. The name Rex probably is form a mispronunciation of Reeks.

THE NORTHINGTON LINEAGE OF CHARLES W. NORTHINGTON(9)
THROUGH THE GENERATION (8)

The best known source of information on the early Northingtons in America known to the writer is titled "NORTHINGTON" by B. C. Holtzclaw pages 153-157 in the book HISTORICAL SOUTHERN FAMILIES, Vol. 3. by John Bennett Boddie in 1959. B. C. Holtzclaw is a descendant of Ann Northington, daughter of Nathan(3) Northington and wife Rebecca Chappell. B. C. Holtzclaw traces the Northingtons from Samuel(1) through the third generation and identifies the fourth generation, and gives some specific information on some of the fourth generation such as birth dates and marriages. His main source of information on the fourth generation is the ALBERMARLE PARISH REGISTER (A.P.R.) and land records.

A. R. application for D.A.R. membership) Nathan (4) and Ann
Northington are believed to have had the following children:

1. David(5) shown on the Tax List for 1800 as son of Nathan Northington. David was born 1781 (Mormon records) and married wife Martha Crowder August 13, 1804 (Marriage Records of Mecklenburgh County, Virginia - 1811-1853). They had one child, Richard(Mormon records).

(4) JOHN NORTHINGTON

The following described John Northington appears to be the John(4) Northington, son of Nathan(3) Northington and Rebecca Chappell Northington, also brother of Nathan(4) Northington.

Holtsclaw and the A.P.R. states that John(4) Northington was born April 18, 1763 and married Sally Stewart 1784. The John Northington described herein was married to Mary C. Booker, November 30, 1795(Marriage Bonds Lunenburg Co. Va.). Their first child was born 1795-eleven years after John(4) married Sally Stewart.

The Marriage records of Mecklenburg County, Va. dated 1811 to 1853 has the following marriages showing John Northington as the father:

1. Rebecca(5) Northington married March 20, 1815 - p-58.
2. Araminta(5) Northington married November 27, 1833 p-99.
3. Betsy(5) C. Northington married August 10, 1825 p-113.
4. Mary(5) B. married December 17, 1832 p-161.
5. Nannie(5) (Nanny) P. married December 31, 1825 p-33.

The Mormon Genealogy Records on CD-ROM gives the following information on the children of John Northington and Mary Cordon Booker in Mecklenburg County, Va.

1. Rebecca(5) Ann Northington, born 1795.
2.Jonathon(5) B. Northington, born 1802, Marriage records shows a Jonathon Northington married Elizabeth Wartman in Mecklenburg County, Va. between 1811 and 1853.
3. Nancy(5) P. Northington, born 1805.
4. Elizabeth(5) C. Northington, born 1807.
5. Mary(5) Booker Northington, born 1812.
Araminta(5) P. Northington, born 1813.

The dates of marriage of each named girl compares so well with the dates of birth for each in both sets (age at time of marriage),and the names are almost perfect matches even to their middle names and middle initials, that I have concluded that the data represents the same family. John(4), described by Holtzclaw, was born April 18, 1763 thus was 32 years old when Rebecca Ann was born, and was 50 years old when Araminta P. was born. This is quite possible. I could find only one John Northington in Virginia in a suitable age bracket to have been the father of these children.

Perhaps John(4), son of Nathan(3) Northington married for a second time to Mary Cordon Booker.

(4) JABEZ NORTHINGTON

Little was found about Jabez(4), son of Nathan(3) and Rebecca Chappell, beyond that given by Holtzclaw. He was born July 10, 1752, married Sarah (unknown). Jabez later moved to Mecklenburg County where deed records P-398 show that he and wife Ann transferred 60 acres of land to Howard Chappell May 28, 1784. In the same deed records P-446 Jabez and wife Ann sold 600 acres to John Northington January 4, 1785. Jabez was named guardian to his younger siblings in 1778 in Sussex County, Va. Later they sued him in Chancery Court for mismanagement of their property. Holtzclaw does not address the verdict.

(5) JOHN WILFRED STEWART NORTHINGTON

JOHN WILFRED STEWART (STUART) NORTHINGTON, son of Nathan(4) and Ann Stewart Northington, was born January 15, 1792 married Mary Hill Reeks in 1816. Mary's birth date was 1800 (all from D.A.R. Membership application for Evelyn Northington Farris). Census records for Brunswick County, Virginia show John Wilfred Stewart Northington as being a school teacher and that he had five children in his household, with their names and ages. Other information from Alabama census records and other sources show Thomas Reeks Northington and William H. Northington being in Alabama at that time and being the children of John Wilfred Stewart Northington and Mary Hill Reeks. John Wilfred Stewart Northington and Mary Hill Reeks had seven children:

1. William H. Northington, born 18 April 1818, Mecklenburg County, Virginia.
2. Thomas Reeks Northington, born 11 January 1820 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.
Note: one source says they raised 10 children. Birth dates do not show births between 1820 and 1828 and between 1828 and 1838.
3. Mary Northington, 1850 Census shows her as being at home and being 30 years of age. This indicates that she and Thomas were twins.
4.Gustavus Adolphus Northington, born Mecklenburg County, Virginia,1850 census shows him being at home and being 22 years old, thus born in 1828.
5. Argyra Atillia Northington, born 25 March 1838 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. Census of 1850 shows her as being at home and 12 years of age.
6. Martha Elizabeth H. Northington, born 24 April 1840. Census records 1850 shows her as being at home and being 10 years old.
7. George Northington, Census records of 1850 shows him as being at home and being seven years of age, thus born in 1843.

John Wilfred Stewart Northington and family were still in Mecklenburg County in the 1840 census. We do not know when they moved to Brunswick County. Nothing is known about the children, Mary and George at this time. However, we do know that the other five children migrated to Autauga County, Alabama during the 1840s and 1850s.

John Wilfred Stewart Northington died in 1860. Mary Hill Reeks Northington died in 1882.

SOME INFORMATION THAT MAY BE OF INTEREST

Marriage records for Mecklenburg County, Va. 1811-1853 shows a William H. Northington married Mary A. Northington 17 October 1849 with J. B. Northington furnishing the surety bond, and Thomas Adams being the Minister. Dr. W. H. Northington and James Northington were listed as members of Boyden Cavalry, May 1861.(Page 306, Book of the James & Goodes of Va.)

There are a lots of questions unresolved through out this report.

Notes that I have not followed up on show that a Nathan Northington married Jane Oliver 11-1-1798, and that Samuel Northington married Priscilla Mitchell(widow) 12-3-1774. Ref; Marriage records of Sussex Co., Va. 1754-1810. I know of no other Nathan Northington living at that time in Virginia. Could Ann Stewart have died and Nathan married again?

THE DESCENDANTS OF NATHAN NORTHINGTON
IDENTIFIED BY HOLTZCLAW AS NATHAN (4)

COMPILED BY CHARLES W. NORTHINGTON

The following information is believed to be correct, except where questions are noted. A great deal of personal research went into this project. Yet, a great amount of information was furnished by relatives, some from research and some from notes and writings of other family members.

Note: marriage records of Sussex County, Va. 1754-1810 shows that a Rev. Smith married a Nathan Northington and Jane Oliver 11-1-1798. Could this have been Nathan (4)? Nathan (3) died about 1777) Nathan (4) was believed to have had the following children:
