The Old Lake Park Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in the town of Lake Park, Georgia. I will not go into the history of the town nor the history of the cemetery since this website is about headstones. That can be left up to the local historical minded persons in the area. Should any of them read this and want a history of some sort written up then feel free to let me know and I will see what we can come up with.
Directions to the cemetery: From US 41 take the Bellville highway westward for a distance of about 100 yards or so. This is heading towards I-75. On the west side of the railroad there is a dirt road to the left that follows the tracks. Take that left. Not too far there is a small lane to the right that goes back into the woods. It may be readily evident or it might just be grown over. Of the few times that I have been to this cemetery there was only one time that there was any evidence of care and concern for those buried there. The only time that I have seen it mowed it appeared that a bush hog was used and you can imagine what that does to the fragile headstones in the cemetery.
Buried in this cemetery are the founders of the town and the donors of the land for this cemetery. Some of that can be found in the Huxford Books and county records. When one sees the deplorable condition of the cemetery it is evident that when the church and cemetery moved, the ancestors were left to fend for themselves.
Granted, I have relations in that cemetery, and, yes the Zeigler family descendants should take an active part in helping keep the cemetery up. This is not my direct line so I don't feel the calling to take on that responsibility. I did donate to the fence that was supposed to be put up around the cemetery but that was about 3 years ago and that fence is not there yet. So, with that said, on with the headstone pictures.
One last thing; It is known that over the years some of the headstones have been destroyed and/or went missing. If anyone has any photos of these headstones that they wish to donate to this website then send them to me and I will put them on here. Remember, this is about preservation and we all have an input.
