The Jacob Snell Cemetery
Pinckard, Alabama

overview of cemetery
This is a view of the cemetery as it presented in December of 2002. Earlier that year I inventoried the cemetery for the County Cemetery book and had to cut my way back in to it. I went ahead and cut the entire area so we could keep it clean as time will allow.

wallace borland
This is Wallace Borland standing amidst the headstones of his ancestors. This picture was taken after I sat one of the headstones back up that had fallen.

cemetery layout
This is the layout of the Mt. Mariah cemetery. As I was inventorying the cemetery it became evident that we actually had two cemeteries here. The Mt. Mariah cemetery had always been known as an African-American cemetery. When I discovered the Snell names not to be consistent with the other names in the cemetery I began to ask questions and soon found out that this was a white family. The headstones you see here are in section A of the layout.

William Snell (The Patriarch)
Adella Snell (Daughter of Jacob and Mary Snell)/a>
Charlie Poyner (Son of John Poyner and Sallie Snell Poyner)
Edwin Oscar Thompson (Son of Aaron N. Thompson and Maria Reece Snell Thompson)
Jacob Snell (Son of William Snell)
John Yon (Son of Seaborn Yon and Elizabeth Snell Yon)
Margie Crim (Daughter of L.E. Crim and Louisa E.M. Snell Crim)
Martha Snell (Wife of William Snell)
Mary Snell (Wife of Jacob Snell)
M.J.E. Thompson (Euphrasia, daughter of Aaron N. Thompson and Maria Reece Snell Thompson)
Sallie Poyner (Martha Ann Sarah Snell, daughter of Jacob and Mary Snell)

The notes you see were contributed by Darlene Athey Hill, a descendant of these families. According to her notes Henry Snell begat Barnard, Barnard Snell begat Christopher, Christopher Snell begat William who is the Patriarch of the Snell Cemetery listed herein. A quick look in the Dale County Cemetery book reveals some names that are real close to the ones mentioned above. I do not have enough information of who is who to dwell on the details especially since this website is about headstones.
