Sacred Heart Church of Arles, Co Laois.
The splendid location of the new chapel
above affords some of the best and most breathtaking views of the
plains stretching from Arles to the beautiful Wicklow Mountains
in the east. On a clear day if you look south east one can quite
clearly see the town of Carlow with the Sugar Factory to the
north of the town and the Cathedral of the Assumption, in the
centre of Carlow. Looking due east you can also pick out the
white walls of Killeen Church which stands out from all the
lovely green trees and pastures which litter the plains as far as
the eye can see. On a clear night you can also see the lights of
the town of Athy in the north and Castledermot which is close to
the Wicklow mountains in the east.
Behind The Sacred Heart Church of Arles in
the graveyard is the grave of the prominent Tenant-leader and the
first editor of the 'Leinster Leader' newspaper, Mr Patrick
Cahill.
In 1880 the 'Leinster Leader' was known as
the "Leinster Leader and Central Counties Commercial and
Agricultural Adviser". This paper was one of the first of the new
breed of nationalist papers which was set up in Naas, Co.
Kildare, in August, 1880. Unfortunately, during its first 6 years
of circulation it was badly managed and accumulated heavy debts
which threatened to sink the newspaper. A Mr. James Carew, MP for
North Kildare, In 1886 Mr. James Carew bought out the paper for
the sum of £1,100. He later went on to set up the Irish Daily
Independent, forerunner of the present Irish Independent. The
year that the Leinster Leader first appeared, there were
seventeen daily newspapers in Ireland".
Not far from, and to the east of Arles
chapel is the site of an old Well situated near the River
Fushoge. This Well can be seen on an old 1900 Ordnance Survey map
of Co. Laois.
