Arles Brass Band  - During the 1930's some of the members of this band were William Muldowney, Arles. Markie Brennan, Cooper Hill on Cornet & Trombone, Tin Whistle & Mouth Organ. Paddy Moran Arles on Bass drum. Joe Brennan, Ballickmoyler on Kettle drum, Owen Redmond on Trombone, Paddy Redmond on Baritone, Kennedy's of the Strand on Clarinet, Mick McDonald Ashfield, (big stooke) on Bass. Mr Boyle from Carlow was the Band Master until he had a mighty row with Fr Killian about how 'Daily Daily Sing to Mary' (which was a catholic hymn that was sang in school) should be arranged. It ended up with big Mick threatening to hit him and kill him, in support of church and country, dreadful!. Mr Boyle was consequently sacked and replaced by Mr Rafter.

  • ARLES GAELIC JUNIOR FOOTBALL TEAM c1950's

  •   (Source Mike McCaffrey ex pupil)

In the 1950's Jack McCaffrey formed a Gaelic Junior Football team in Arles and won 3 games against Killabban, Killeen and Ballylynan. Unfortunately the team folded shortly afterwards because there was little interest and junior players were not interested at the time so he was unable to provide a full team of players to continue playing. In 1955/6 a little girl went missing in the area. People from Arles and Ballickmoyler searched for her all night. Next morning when she was found safe and well and in good health. Her fathers name was Henry Ovington.

  • Andy Nolan & Tom Cooney c1938

The man on the wheel-rake is Tommy Gorman. The house by the hay shed is where I (W. Muldowney) was born. The house on the right is the one my parents moved to. The Myron’s have lived there since 1956.

Peter Byrne riding past Mr Feeney's shop in Arles c1968. I went to Arles school with his sons in the 50's

    Johnny Moran

Johnny Moran moved from Rossmore to Arles in 1924 and lived in a broken down house where the Technical school was built. Johnny worked as a sugar cook at the Beet factory in Carlow following the 1948 strike.
Josie Moran married Andy Nolen. Josie was a great friend of your Mother.
Paddy Moran worked for years at Feehans of Ballickmoyler, and later at the Sugar Beet factory. He is  still alive and well in Carlow age 91yrs.
Frank Moran the youngest died last year (2005) at the family home in Arles.
John Moran was born near the Water-Works in Killeshin 1877, one of five children, and not very far away his wife, Elizabeth Connolly was born in 1877, one of eight children. I am not sure when they married, probably about 1904??
Mrs Moran died 1953 and John Moran died 1963 and their first three children Josie Paddy and Johnny were born in a mud thatched house, (up a little lane way) off the road that runs from the Rossmore grotto down to Killeshin.
There were four or five families living there.  The houses were built into a bank which consisted of a mud wall six feet high at the front, a low one foot at the back.  I called there in 1984 to have tea and a chat with Hanna Dunne and her son Martin who were the last family left there, Hanna was 85 yrs old and very interesting to talk to.

P S Hanna and her son died in 1985.

Andy and my father were close friends as teenagers. Both got married 1917, Andy to Miss T Procter.. They had one son Frank 1923 , The mother died of TB in 1930.
Andy married Johnny Moran's sister 1936. Andy's brother Pierce married my aunt, and his sister Bridey married John Cooney and lived in the house at Coolanowl where Dinny Lawlor's son is now living..
All the Nolan's were born there.

Bill Moran married Martin Redmond's sister.  He had a straight leg and was very fond of the drink.  The family emigrated to England in 1959.  His father worked very hard all his life and gave the farm to Bill in 1950 from then it all went down hill from there on.  I called to see old Ned Moran in Luton 1972.  He told me, they barely had their fare to come to England but sure there was no need to worry they give you money for nothing here. I have never been so happy in all my life. He was 86 and (King of the Castle) in a posh home.
