Report of the Commissioners
of
Irish Education Inquiry.

Parochial Returns.

Report of the Commissioners of Irish Education Inquiry. Parochial Returns. Summaries drawn from Second Report of Commissioners of Irish Education 1826. Published in the Blue Book 1827. Forms were issued to all R.C. Parish Priests and Ch. of Ireland Ministers for completion. copies of which are in the Pat Purcell Papers. In the First Report of 1824 the Commissioners had noted: "County Laoighis: (Laois) Of the anxiety of our poor people to procure for their children even the rudiments of an education, few are better qualified to form a correct judgment than their clergy, who daily witness the sacrifices' they make for that purpose. Indeed their ardour in this respect is to be damped by sheer necessity alone -want of means to defray the expenses of an education, or in the case of a free school, want of clothes to wear to school."
