LAOIS HISTORY

Coolanowle

Co. Laois

In May 1926, (the date Bill Muldowney started school in Arles) there was a lovely thatched shop on this site, where Feeney's empty shop is today.
It was owned and run by John Pender and his wife until late 1931, when it was sold to Martin Feeney.  The beautiful shop was pulled down and old Dan Wall from Cooper Hill built the present house which is now an empty structure.
John Pender with his wife moved to Coolanowle, rented the gate lodge from Willie Keenan and opened a huckster shop which sold tea sugar Woodbines and Cope's freshly baked bread. The shop kept going for about ten years.  The present owner Mr Mullhall demolished the lodge in the early seventies.

It is now the entrance to Coolanowle Country House & Leisure Centre.

An advertisement on the internet describes it as:

"a unique haven of tranquillity, combined with a myriad of country pleasures for you to enjoy. You can stroll around our 3 acres of rambling parkland featuring our beautiful beech wood gardens and 18th century flax ponds, not to mention our working Organic Farm. Fully certified as organic, Coolanowle has been chosen as a Demonstration Farm, one of only seven in the country"
