| Biography* | Following information was obtained in November 1999 from: Stephen Pegler PhD Student New Testament Trinity Evangelical Divinity School Bannockburn, IL Daniel Doughty is Stephen Pegler's grandfather. Notes for DANIEL DOUGHTY: About the date and place of birth for DANIEL DOUGHTY, my grandfather: DANIEL DOUGHTY, the youngest son of Felix Doughty and Nancy Jane Edwards Doughty, was born in Macoupin County, Illinois, on July 13, 1855. This information was included in a summary of a then-tentative Doughty family "history" sent to all of Daniel Doughty's living grandchildren and other relatives when Dorothy and I started our research in the spring of 1988. Of all of those who were kind enough to respond, no one suggested a different date or place of birth for Daniel. The 1855 birthdate for Daniel is also confirmed by a listing recorded in one of the two Doughty family Bibles -- the one now in the possession of Daniel's granddaughter, Ella May Doughty Wolfe. (Ella May, the daughter of Victor Jasper Doughty and Frances Wickhorst Doughty, wrote me some time ago that after Herman Kroeger died in 1931, her parents mailed the other Doughty family Bible to Kroeger's sisters in Louisville, Kentucky.) A succession of U.S. Census Records also point to the fact that Daniel Doughty's birthplace was in Illinois. Summaries of those Censuses (which we have on file) show that Daniel's place of birth was Illinois and was so indicated when the Censuses were taken in 1870, 1880, and in the Colorado State Census taken in 1885. (Daniel died on October 23, 1896.) Children of DANIEL DOUGHTY and ELLA SMITH are: i. FELIX MARION4 DOUGHTY, b. December 01, 1880, Ft Lupton, Weld Co, Colorado; m. LENA OEHLKERS. ii. Co. ,NJ Lib N3 P375. dm intestate with Henry 1l Felix 1l Felix Doughty 1k bm ____ ___ __ to Abel Doughty 1j with Mary Ann (nee _ 1j) Doughty Among the questions asked most often by some members of the Doughty family and the Powerses' is: When did the Doughtys first come to Colorado? So far, no 1860 census records have been found for Felix Doughty, his wife Jane, their children, or their children's spouses in either Illinois or Colorado. They may have been overlooked, but the conclusion is -- that Felix and his family were living in Macoupin County, Illinois in 1858, that they left Illinois for Colorado sometime in either 1859 or 1860, but did not arrive in Colorado Territory and establish a residence in time to be counted in the 1860 Census for that Territory. This conclusion is based on the following events or pieces of evidence: In Macoupin County, Illinois, in 1858, Felix Doughty filed a claim for Bounty Land as a result of his service as a mounted volunteer in the Black Hawk War in 1832. The U.S. Department of Military Pensions approved Felix's claim, and he was granted about 40 acres of land. The natural conclusion: Felix Doughty was living in Illinois in 1858. Rachel A. Doughty, daughter of Felix and Nancy Jane, married Eli Lee in Macoupin County, Illinois on February 9. 1858. The License number and the marriage Record are on file in the county Court in Carlinville, Illinois. Rachel Doughty Lee, wife of Eli Lee, died September 21, 1858 in Macoupin County, Illinois - quite possibly the victim of a contagious epidemic of some kind. Martha A. Doughty, another daughter of Felix and Nancy Jane and a sister of Rachel, died October 14, 1858. The early 1860s seem a much more plausible and likely time for the migration of the Doughty's from Illinois to Colorado. There is in fact, ample documentation for that. For instance, the Doughty entries in a book titled Fort Lupton History: 1836 to 1976 by Cleon Roberts, published in 1976. Also, as Aunt Alice Wickhorst has pointed out, at least Felix and his oldest son, Samuel Allison Doughty, came from Illinois to the Colorado Gold Rush of 1859. She has, moreover, written that Samuel Allison, who was born in 1838, was 21 years old when he and his father made this first trip to Colorado: 1838 + 21 years = 1859. (A year or two later, father and son returned to Macoupin, picked up Nancy Jane Doughty and the rest of the children, and brought the entire family back to Colorado Territory.) It's possible that "the first Doughty's lived around Loveland, Colorado for a time before they came to the Lupton area." However, Felix laid his claim to his homestead on the Platte River a couple of miles south and west of Fort Lupton. (A chart, page 13-1, Roberts's Fort Lupton History, suggests 1863-) It is also possible and not at all unlikely that the wagon train in which the Doughty's, came to Colorado stayed in Iooveland until the following spring before going on west to Oregon. There is evidence, that any of the Doughty's went along with the wagon train to the West Coast at that time. From a history of Fort Lupton, Colorado, page 115. Felix Doughty was born on March 6, 1810, and Nancy was born in May of the same year. Both were in their fifties when they settled here, out west of the townsite. Their children were Alpheus B., Samuel, Daniel, and Emma. They had a grandchild named Daniel. The older boys homesteaded their own land near Fort Lupton. Felix Doughty served in the same regiment with Abraham Lincoln in the Blackhawk War of 1832, the 2nd Illinois Mountain Volunteers. The people of Fort Lupton were very impressed with Mr. Doughty because of his six-foot frame and his habit of wearing a red shirt and tucking his pants into high leather boots. The Indians were so determined to trade their valuables for Felix Doughty's younger daughter that a Negro mammy guard had to be hired. The girl's long red hair was an attraction not only to the Indians, but also to the single ranchers who lived along the Platte. Both Felix and Samuel had land west of Fort Lupton, on the other side of the river from downtown. The following is from letters written by Aunt Alice Wickhorst to Stephen Pegler, his mother and grandmother in the late 1970's and 1980's. Alice Iva Doughty Wickhorst was born August 23, 1892, Fort Lupton, Weld Co., Colorado and she died June 28, 1995, at age 102, in Sacramento, California. She married Louis Wickkhorst on September 09, 1908 at Greeley, Weld Co, Colorado. Louis was born October 02, 1878 at Brighton, Colorado and he died December 12, 1946, Twin Falls, Idaho. Both Alice and Louis are buried at Twin Falls, Idaho. Grandfather Felix lived in Illinois. He had one brother Henry. There were no sisters. Felix was a small child when they lost their father. His father and several men went hunting in the woods. The men scattered out while hunting. When they returned the man Doughty was missing. They waited thinking he would be coming soon, but he never came. They went out to search for him. His wife Ann with baby Henry on her hip, and little Felix following, walked through the woods, with men looking for her husband. Later they found him. Some wild animal had eaten the side of his face off. They never found who killed him, but he had been shot. Some time later Ann married again. The boys grew up and married. Felix had a family. Henry left the state, and went to Texas. Many years went by, when we heard a Henry Doughty had been killed in Texas. We never knew if it was our relative. Felix Doughty and wife lived in Illinois. He was born 1810. She was born in 1813. They had eight children, five girls, and three boys. Their names were Mary, Samuel, Sarah, Emma, Daniel, Rachel, Martha, and Griffin. Mary passed away at the age of two, and buried in Illinois. The others married, and made homes in Illinois. When Grandfather Felix lived in Illinois he worked with a doctor, as he was interested in medicine. He learned about herbs, leaves, and different kinds of barks from trees, which they made medicine. There wasn't many doctors in those times. Grandfather would be gone from home for weeks at a time caring for the sick, helping people to take care of the dead, by laying them out (as it was called) and digging graves. My father would take care of the farm while he was gone. My father was twenty-one when he and his father came with a wagon train, which consisted of several of their neighbors, and others that wanted to make the journey to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, to stake out their claims, and dig for gold. They traveled by oxen, and covered wagon. The traveling was slow. There was several wagons, which consisted of women and children. The people voted to make my father wagon master, which was a big responsibility. This was in 1859 when the big "gold rush" was on in the Rocky Mountains. He would have to see that there was plenty of water and to where and when to camp, also that there was plenty of food for stock. There was rules to be obeyed, and duties to be formed. They were always on alert for Indians. Often there would be signs, such as the way grass or the weeds was laid on the ground, or the way the rocks were placed. Seeing smoke going straight up they knew it was an Indian signal. At times the Indians were close, and just passed through there. The Indians was also on the watch for the white man. There was a time when they couldn't find water. They had traveled a long distant, and their water supply had been used up. The children begin to cry; also the women begin to get weary. Father tried to comfort them, as time went on the men was getting worried. They just traveled on hoping to find water, soon the oxen begin to travel faster, Father knew that water wasn't far away. He stopped the wagons, and saying they would all have water very soon to drink, but they could only have a couple of swallows to drink at a time so they wouldn't become ill. The men were to keep the cattle from rushing into the water, as they would all drink more than they should, and become ill. All had to obey orders to stay healthy. The Indians would come riding up and try to get into their belongings, and would steal what they could. Once when they were camped the Indians came riding up to them. The Men had their guns, and were ready. One big buck Indian came over to my father, and grabbed his gun. Father held onto the gun. The Indian would turn it back and forth trying to get it out of my father's hands. They struggled for some time, at last my father could feel the Indian weaking a little, Father was also getting tired, so he watched his chance, and wrenched the gun from the Indian's hold, then the Indian ran. Father raised his gun, and aimed at the Indian, but he was running a zig zag pattern, and father couldn't get a aim on him. If the Indian could of broke the hold on the gun it would of been his. They had many experiences in crossing the plains, but father was never harmed. They arrived safely at the gold sight. The Gold Rush was in the year of 1859. They first came to Denver city, and all there was there was a little log cabin. Many came to stake out claims in the mountains, some were not honest people, there were robbers. The miners had laws of their own. Lawyers were among them, and people of different occupation. Everyone was to obey the law those who disobeyed either was put out, got out, or found hanging on a tree. While father was in the mountains he had a friend called Scott, and they were close companions. While they were traveling down into the valley on horses, and leading a packhorse with bedding and supplies, they were aware of the Indians being close. Father was in the lead, Scott was to follow father, so the Indians wouldn't see them, as he came to the top of the mountain he could see the valley was full of Indians, so he nugged the horse and went down the other side just hoping the Indians didn't see them. It could of mean their lives. Father and Scott were with out food for three days, and both was very hungry. They came to a Trading Post, but the Keeper wouldn't sell them any food for their gold dust. When they came to the next Trading Post, Father said we are going to get food, by any means. They walked in and demanded food, by laying is revolver on counter. They were given food, being that they were so hungry only a little at a time was they able to eat, and drink. They would wait a while and eat and drink again, so they wouldn't become ill. Father and Grandfather Felix traveled back to Illinois to bring back Grandmother and family to Colorado. They bought a home and farmland, which they farmed. Father cut rails to fence the farm, also helped pay off the farm. It was located west of Fort Lupton, along the Platte River. It was a very prosperous farm. Father would haul big loads of hay up into the mountains to Black Hawk, and Central city. There he would sell the hay. He would drive part of the way, then unhitch the horses, and make camp. He would sleep under the wagon. At night the wild animals would come near and call to each other. Other farmers would haul grain, and hay to the mountains. The trips would take from three to four days. Farmers would also haul to Denver. They always carried guns. Grandfather Felix and Grandmother Jane Doughty both died in 1887, and are buried in the Fort Lupton cemetery. Near Grandfather Felix grave is a plaque of him fighting in the Blackhawk War. My father farmed the land afterwards, which he bought later. Years went by, and he left the farm, and moved to Brighton. Brighton is located north of Denver. Father's health wasn't too good, and they would travel to the eastern states. His health was improved, but mother's health wold be worse due to asthma, and she became very ill. They would leave the east and return to Colorado again. In another letter she added the following after describing that Samuel had been shot and his face eaten off. "The men, tense and nervous, glanced from one to another, asking, 'Who did this?' All denied doing it. There was one man among the crowd that had gathered, and some thought he might be guilty. But he, too, denied the deed. It seemed that some time before Anne was married to Samuel Doughty, this man had insulted her, and she had slapped his face. Much angered, he had threatened Anne, saying to her, 'I will get even with you if it takes six years!' so he was asked again if had done the deed, but he kept on denying it. I don't remember my father saying if anything was done about this man, but I imagine the crowd could do nothing about it. "Maybe you have heard that long ago there was a kind of saying of belief that if one who was guilty of murder would lay their finger on the dead, there would be a spot like blood appear on it. But, anyway, this certain, the suspected killer, would not do that. If anything was ever done about this shooting, I don't remember my father telling us about it. We know that Grandpa Felix had a brother named Henry." My father [Samuel jr.] passed away in Boulder, Colorado, on April 7, 1931. He was buried in Fort Lupton, Colorado. Father's age was 92 years, 5 mo's, and 24 days old. Illinois military and Naval Dept, Blackhawk war, p 61 lists Felix Doughty, enrolled 19 June 1932, private, lost horse on force march, sick in quarters. After his grandfather, Abel Doughty died, there was a public sale in NJ of his assets to go to Felix and Henry Doughty. This sale was 8 April 1833. Their distant relative, Felix Leeds, was the attorney for this. Henry and Felix received their inheritance 26 November 1835 in Macoupin Co., IL. On 8 June 1836 their mother Ann Redman swore the following: That my maiden name was Ann Teagarden that I became acquainted with Robert Doughty and Samuel Doughty who were [illegible word] brothers in Claremont County, state of Ohio, that two or three years after my acquaintance was formed viz in the year 1808, I was married to Samuel Doughty in Claremont County & state of Ohio, that in the month of October 1808 I had a son by the said Doughty, which son we named Daniel, and which son died in Ohio in the month of March 1809. In the month of March 1810 I had a second son by my husband Samuel Doughty, which son was named Felix. This son is now living in Macoupin County, state of Illinois. In April 1812 my youngest son by Doughty was born. His name is Henry & now lives in Missouri: or did the last time I heard from his which was about six months since. These are all the children I had by my first husband Samuel Doughty. In the year 1813 my husband Samuel Doughty and myself together with our two children, Felix and Henry L. Doughty moved to Franklin County State of Indiana where we all lived together until the 18th of November following. On the morning of the 18th my husband Doughty left home for the purpose of hunting and he never returned. Afterwards about two months from this time he was found dead about 4 ½ miles from his residence, supposed to have been murdered. The last time I heard of his being seen living Thomas Whitaker was in his company. After the death of my first husband I married a man by the name of Solomon Sherwood with whom I lived about three years. When he Sherwood died I then married Edward Redman with whom I have lived ever since. I now reside with him in Green County, State of Illinois. [her mark]. | |

| Biography* | Source information on the DUNN family. Obtained most of this information from: Jayne DUNN Letter dated 21 Sept 1987 203 Redwood Drive New Albany, IN 47150 There are still unresolved questions as to exact relationship of some of the individuals. In other words I probably have made some incorrect assumptions. Please DO NOT take the family groups as being correct or complete. Two records of estate sales in Hardin Co., KY one for William DUNN and the other for Robert DUNN. William DUNN died circa 1818 and Robert DUNN Sr. died February 1820. William DUNN's estate was appraised on 25 June 1818 but was not recorded until 5 February 1819 and the sale was recorded on 10 July 1820. Robert DUNN senr. is indicated as a purchaser - could he have made purchases before his death and before the sale was recorded? This might explain him being listed. It was a little over two years between the appraisal and the sell - did someone copy the dates wrong? Feel this should be re-checked. Robert DUNN's appraisal and sale is recorded on the same day 14 August 1820, again both Robert DUNN Sr. and Robert DUNN Jr. are listed. Where there 3 Robert DUNN's - or is there a mistake? Must try and get copy of original estate settlements. I feel there is a mistake when reference is made to Robert DUNN senr. in Robert DUNN's estate sale and that in fact the sale is for Robert DUNN Sr. Maybe Robert DUNN Jr. had a son named Robert DUNN and after death of Robert DUNN Sr., Robert DUNN Jr. is now called Robert DUNN Sr. and his son became Robert DUNN Jr. 1820 Hardin Co., KY Census - Elizabeth DUNN Senior, Robert DUNN, Joseph DUNN and Elizabeth DUNN Jr. Both William DUNN and Robert DUNN Sr. had wives named Elizabeth. Made assumption Elizabeth DUNN Sr. is Elizabeth STEPHENSON DUNN and Elizabeth DUNN Jr. is Elizabeth JOHNSTON DUNN. ****************************************************************** "Portrait and Biographical Record of Macoupin County, Illinois 1891" - Robert Huddleston states that Robert DUNN has born in Ireland.
