Burgerts Old Family Bible By Jan Jordan Lockensgard.
Written by Jan Jordan Lockensguard:
"We descend from David Burgert who was born in 1763. I have also corresponded with descendants from his brothers, Adam, Daniel and Abraham. Those three brothers used the name Burger and then different ones started to add a "t" or two and some dropped the "r". The German immigrants did this a lot, changing the spelling of their surname, usually to what sounds more like the American pronunciation. Great Grandma Ella's family spelled it Burgert and then some of her relatives started to spell it Burgett and then it would go back and forth. The best thing we have heard to do, is to use the ancestors spelling and then change it as they did, but mostly to indicate how it is spelled on different documents in the source notes."
