Cemeteries

Since I was a very young child, no matter how far away we lived at the time, my mother took me every year to the church where she was raised. We visited with living family and friends, then went to the Friendship Cemetery in Smith County, Texas, and walked up and down the rows, visiting the graves of her great grandparents and great uncles, and, over the years, her parents, childhood friends and cousins. I learned the location of each grave, and over time how more than 90% were related to our family.

Strangely, some would think, this gave me a feeling of comfort and continuity. I knew who and where my family was, about the natural end of life, but not the end of memory.

As I learned more about my family, and about my husband's family, I visited more cemeteries and collected information about the families to share with others.

In Louisiana:
