LUSHBAUGH, Benjamin F. (ca 1840's) Benjamin F. Lushbaugh, was a Pawnee Indian Agency agent in Nance County, Nebr. in the Fullerton-Genoa area in the 1860's. Comments about him are found in "The Indian War of 1864" by Captain Eugene F. Ware, published in 1911, St. Martin’s Press, New York 1%0. One characteristic of our LOSHBAUGH clan is auburn or reddish hair, so the account of Benjamin’s whiskers is of interest. He had brilliant red, fluffy, bunched side-whiskers not uncommon in those times -- differing from "burnsides" because they were not connected with the mustache in front. According to Captain Ware the soldiers adopted this wearing of "Lushbaugh" whiskers. He reported that for several years in various places throughout the West he heard them called by the name "Lushbaugh's." Benjamin Lushbaugh went to Washington, D.C. in 1862 to get permission to organize a regiment of Pawnee warriors for Army Service but his request was turned down on 13 October 1862. In 1863 Agent Lushbaugh also held a lucrative mail contract (would this have been "pony express" I wonder. MYA). Have not been able to learn who his parents were and to which branch of the Loshbaugh family he belongs.
