LOSHBAUGH, John b. 1775

Sources of information:

Records of St. Joseph Parish, Bertrand, Michigan, now at the library of the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana,,

Burial records of St. Joseph Cemetery, Bertrand, Michigan, now at Michigan State Library, Lansing.

1840, 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census of Berrien County, Michigan; Berrien County Marriage Licenses; Probate Records; Obituary of Henry in Niles, Michigan, newspaper.

Martin's death dates from W.P.A. Graves Registration, ST. Joseph Co., Ind. -- buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

According to family tradition, John Loshbough and his son Henry donated the land upon which Notre Dame University was built, six miles from Bertrand, Michigan. John, his son Henry, and Henry's son Albert Dennis, assisted in the building of the convent which is adjacent to the cemetery there.

Notes by Mildred Y. Aday:

... buried in the Old Catholic cemetery at Bertrand, Michigan; his son Henry and other family members in same lot, although tombstones no longer standing. In 1972 a visit to the cemetery disclosed the marker for Henry buried in grass and weeds, lying on the ground. Some years before a picture had been take of the two headstones (standing upright) of Henry and John. In 1977 there had been much construction work - new houses built in the area around the cemetery and many headstones were no longer standing and seemed to have disappeared. The headstones for Henry and John could not be located. The county historical society has placed a large commemorative sign in the cemetery, and it at least was still standing in 1977.

He died intestate.  The estate was probated in St. Joseph Co. Michigan His son Henry was appointed administrator of the estate. Probate File #202, Berrien Co.

LOSHBAUGH Family Info prepared by Mildred Y. Aday, 1989:

"One of the children of Henry Loshbaugh (1800) states the family originated from the German-speaking area of Switzerland, not Germany. Also, the locality of origin in Europe is said to be Alsace-Lorraine. Family tradition is that Henry and his father John donated land when Notre Dame University was established; just six miles from Bertrand, Michigan. My grandfather, Albert Dennis Loshbaugh, his father Henry, and Henry's father John, assisted in the building of the convent which is adjacent to the cemetery."

JOHN LUSHBOUGH (1775-1860)

(in letter from John Harden Lushbough to L.E. Fisler, 10 Nov. 1936)

. . . Duke Lushbough came to this country for religious reasons, and the priest that founded Notre Dame wanted 1/2 of the estate for the college for going back and claiming it, and Duke would not give it, so some time later the old family records were stolen. Of course, I don't know, only hearsay, and I don't know of it makes much difference anyway . . .

(in letter from Mildred Aday to Susan Anderson, 23, Jan. 1980)

Another family reports the 'tradition' this way: Twin sisters, Lady Isabella and Lady Isadora (Von Kief or Von Koffel -- names forgotten) lived in Heidelburg, Germany--owned much land there. They married two Loshbough brothers and came to America. Probably married in Germany. The boys' names were probably John and George. One of these man and one of these women were the ancestors of our line. This family tradition also has it that George Loshbough (1792-1871) had an older brother,John Loshbough. John started to Germany to trace the property, but was taken sick on the way and returned to America. Another effort was made to trace it. This was in Father Sorin's time (founder of Notre Dame). He said he would prove the claim if the heirs would give him half for Notre Dame. They refused, thinking they would do it themselves, but so far as we know, nothing was ever done."
