| Biography* | John Nolen Hodnett descends from Maj. John Hodnett, an English merchant.1 Maj. John Hodnett's son was Ayriss Hodnett, who was the father of Benjamin Hodnett who married Elizabeth Collier and they were the parents of James Hodnett who served in the war of 1812.1 James was born in Prince Edward Co., VA and he migrated through the Carolinas to Georgia and then into Alabama.2 With his wife, Sarah Grier, he settled down on nearly 2,000 acres of land near the Tallapoosa River.1 The ancestral home, built in 1832, and 40 acres of surrounding land are registered by the State of Alabama as one of the state's Heritage and Century farms.1 Most of the remaining land remains in the hands of descendants. John Nolen Hodnett, a grandson of James Hodnett, was born and raised in another home built by James for John's parents near a trading post called Frog Eye near the Hodnett Bend of the Tallapoosa River.1 John Nolen Hodnett attended Florence State Teachers College in Lauderdale Co., AL and he went on to teach elementary school in Wadley, AL for several years.1 He then operated a drug store in Wadley, AL with his brother, William Lawrence Hodnett.1 When John's mother was no longer able to manage on her own, John moved his family back to the farm where they remained until after his mother's death in 1920.1 In the early 1920's John went to work for Russell Mills and he moved the family to Alexander City, AL and this is where he remained until his death in 1952.1 |

| Biography* | Sallie was the daughter of Broxon Yarbrough and Emily Miriam (Culpepper) Carlisle. Her middle name is a problem. She was listed as "Sarah E. Carlisle" in the 1880 census. Mrs. G. E. (Katheryn Coker) Bryant in a 20 Sep 1978 letter listed Sarah as "Sarah F. Carlisle" from the B. Y. Carlisle family record. "S. A." was listed on the tombstone of her infant daughter, Marie. I suspect that she was originally named Sarah Ezilla for her father's sister. Sallie was born and raised near Wadley, AL. She was first noted in census records in the 1880 federal census of Flatrock, AL which was apparently near Almond to the west of Wadley, AL. Unfortunately, the 1890 census records were burned and the next notice of Sallie is her marriage to James Benjamin Broxton Clegg at Almond, AL in 1899. The couple settled down to farm and raise their family near Wadley, AL. Sometime after the birth of their last child, the couple moved their family to Manchester, Meriwether Co., GA.1 Sallie was 61 years old when she lost her husband of 35 years. She died in Atlanta, GA in 1959 at the age of 85. |

| Biography* | James Benjamin Broxton Clegg was a descendant of John Polk Clegg and information about the family can be found in W. Harold Broughton's The Clegg's of Old Chatham. John Polk Clegg was born in Chatham, NC on October 14, 1792, the son of Thomas and Bridget (Polk) Clegg, and he was noted as a private in Capt. Aaron Evan's Co., 5th Infantry Regiment from Raleigh, NC on an 1814 muster roll. In 1816, John married Martha Boone and James Polk Clegg was born to them on September 14, 1818. James studied to become a doctor at the Georgia Botanical College.1 Dr. James Polk Clegg married Amanda Jane Haralson and James H. Clegg was born to them on March 9, 1851. On the second Sunday in August of each year, the Clegg's have an annual reunion at Pleasant Hill Methodist Church which is south of Highway 77 to the west of Wadley, AL in Township 22, Range 10 on the line of Sections 4 and 9.2 James Burie Clegg, a son of James Benjamin Broxton and Sarah (Carlisle) Clegg, wrote:3 We attended the Clegg reunion, which was held at the old Clegg place near Malone, or Flat Rock, near Wadley - for the first time in many years! I went to a reunion there about 1915, I believe. Our great granddaddy, Dr. Jim Clegg built it in 1860. Our granddad, Rev. James H. Clegg, lived there, too. He was a Methodist preacher and farmer. It's still a sturdy old house and was owned by Eunice Clegg Stephens until last year when she sold it to an insurance man Clegg, a nephew, of La Grange, along with 125 acres. Dr. James Polk Clegg and Rev. James H. Clegg are both buried in Pleasant Hill Methodist Church Cemetery. James Burie Clegg wrote about his father:4 We grew up in Meriwether County, Ga after moving to Manchester from Wadley, Ala. Papa was a railroad dispatcher and also ran a store there. |

By 1905, William had made his way to Birmingham and this is where he married Mary Etta Dean and where they settled down to raise a family. Mrs. B. L. (Mary Hodnett) Craft wrote1 that her uncle "was comptroller with Republic Steel [Birmingham, AL] for many years." At some point, William and Mary Etta were divorced. James Burie Clegg, wrote:2 I suppose you know that Uncle Willie spent a lot of time in South America. He sometimes stopped to visit us in Atlanta and could speak Spanish fluently.
