He recovered, but lost his right arm from two inches belo w the shoulder. His daughter Elizabeth said he had a wooden arm & was determined to learn to douse it for everything. But he did learn to write with his left hand. Aunt Edna told Elizabeth that they had been dating for several months before she kn ew he had a wooden hand and arm. He wore a glove. He and his father Lawrence were in business together in the grain & elevator in Burleson. He wanted and intended to be a jeweler, but after the accident he could not. Instead, he took correspondance business courses & went to a business school in Ft. Worth, & learned accounting and banking. Martin Chisenhall & his brother-in-Law, Charlie Taylor were instrumental in the organization of the Farmers & Merchants State Bank in 1913 in Burleson. He was the first cashier. Dr. J. F. Dunn was the first president. Martin's middle name,Bro wn, was after a friend - not a relative.1 |
