D. J. Powers wrote on 5 Aug 2006: "John C. Murphy is the son of Harmon Murphy and Hariet Holland Murphy both from Perry County, Tennessee. John was born in the Bolivar Community of Poinsett County, Arkansas on January 5, 1840, and died on February 21, 1914 in Greene County, Arkansas. He was a teamster in the Civil War and was, so I have been told, in the Battle of Tunnel Hill, Georgia, although that has not been proven yet. He was married to Ellen Freeman before he married Martha and they had two daughters: Della born in 1876 and Elizabeth born in 1880. She may have died in chilbirth with Elizabeth.³

John C. Murphy is found in the 1870 census as a clerk in a grocery store in Wedowee, Randolph Co AL. In 1880 and 1900 census, he is also in Randolph Co. The Alabama State Gazetteer & Business Directory for 1887 lists him in the community of Gay, Randolph Co AL: Rural post office 5 miles S. of Wedowee; population 15

I have researched this family for several years as John's brother, James P. D. Murphy, was my great grandfather. John was never in Arkansas.
