| Biography* | James Beglar Carlisle's parents were recorded in the 1850 and 1860 census records of Meriwether Co., GA and this is where he is presumed to have been born. In the 1900 census, James was gives his birth month and year as Mar 1854 but this is unlikely since he was listed as 8 in the 1860 census and his brother, Richard, who was listed as 6 in in the 1860 census was supposed to have been born in February of 1854. James was noted living with his parents in the 1860 census of Meriwether Co., GA and he would have moved with his widowed mother to Randolph Co., AL probably soon after learning of James M. Carlisle's death in the Civil War. James was noted living with his widowed mother in the 1870 census of Randolph Co., AL But some time before his 1877 marriage, James apparently moved to Tallapoosa Co., AL. Possibly he moved with his mother and was living with or near his oldest brother, William Carlisle. Based on the birth locations of his children, James moved his family to Texas sometime between 1891 and 1894 and "Beglar Carlisle" was noted with his family in the 1900 census of Bell Co., TX. A 56 year old "J. B. Carlisle" born in Georgia was noted (ED 18, p. 24) in the 1910 census of Bell Co., TX. He was listed both of his parents as having been born in Georgia. He listed himself as having been married once for 33 years. According to his obituary, shortly after the 1910 census, James Beglar Carlisle moved his family to Denton Co., TX where he died at Lake Dallas. The following death notice was from p. 5 of what appears to be a Denton County paper (possibly the Denton, Texas, Record-Chronicle ) for 11 Nov 1927: Plans for Carlisle Funeral Await Arrival of Relatives Arrangements for funeral services for J. B. Carlisle, 74, who died suddenly at his home near Lake Dallas Thursday morning, had not been made Friday morning, pending arrival of relatives. Carlisle, who had lived near Lake Dallas for the past 16 years, is survived by his widow and eight children: Mrs. Ludie Sims, Bartonville; Mrs. Jessie D. Cox, Lubbock; Mrs. C. W. Lamer and Homer C. Carlisle, Salina, Kan; Hubert Carlisle, Madison, Wis; Howard Breckenridge; Leonard, San Antonia and William A., Lake Dallas. A funeral announcement followed on 12 Nov 1927 p. 9: CARLISLE FUNERAL TO BE HELD SATURDAY Funeral services for J. B. Carlisle, who died at his home near Lake Dallas Thursday morning, were to be held at the Carlisle home at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon, followed by burial in the Swisher cemetery. The services were to be conducted by Rev. Edward R. Barcus, pastor of the First Methodist Church here. |

| Biography* | In the 1900 census, Nancy was listed as having had 9 children, 8 of whom were still living in 1900 but a great-granddaughter, Mrs. C. V. (Nancy Thompson) Danley, lists 10 children, all of whom were born before the 1900 census. Of those 10 children, 8 can be accounted for either in the 1900 census or in later obituary notices. The two remaining children are Hester Ann and Della. Hester Ann appeared in the 1880 census of Tallapoosa County, Alabama with her sister Ludie and her parents. Presumably, she died before 1900. Della did not appear in a census. Possibly she died in infancy and was not counted in 1900 since her twin was still living. The following obituary notice for Nancy A. Elizabeth Motley is from p. 8 of the Denton, Texas, Record-Chronicle for 23 Aug 1933: Mrs. J.B. Carlisle Dies Late Tuesday Mrs. J.B. Carlisle, 74, died here Tuesday evening about 6:30 o'clock, following several days' illness of double pneumonia. Her condition had been critical for the past two days. Mrs. Carlisle, a resident of Lake Dallas for the past 20 years, lived in Denton for two years preceding that time. She moved here from her native state, Alabama. Eight children survive, five sons and three daughters: J. L. and W. A. Carlisle of Lake Dallas; D. H. Carlisle of Salina, Kan., H. E. Carlisle of Hayes, Kan., Howard Carlisle of Breckenridge, Mrs. W. M. Simms of Bartonville, Mrs. Jessie D. Cox of Brownfield and Mrs. G. W. Lamer of Los Angeles, Cal. Her [Mrs. J. B. Carlisle's] husband died about six years ago. All the children except Mrs. Lamer were at the bedside; Mrs. Lamer was to arrive here during the day Wednesday. Funeral services were to be held Wednesday afternoon at 5 o'clock at the residence at Lake Dallas, conducted by Rev. J. R. Atchley, pastor of the Methodist Church there. Burial will be in Swisher Cemetery. The following notice was from p. 4 of 24 Aug 1933 of what appears to be the same paper: Final Rites for Mrs. J. B. Carlisle Funeral services for Mrs. J. B. Carlisle, who died at the Denton Hospital Tuesday evening, were held at her home in Lake Dallas Wednesday afternoon at 5 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J. R. Atchely, pastor of the Methodist Church. Burial was in the Swisher cemetery, and sons and sons-in-law were pallbearers. Hymns sung by Charlie Mercer, Glenn Edwards and Floyd Daugherty were "In the Sweet Bye and Bye," "The Day is Over" and "Nearer My God to Thee." A large number of friends and relatives attended from Denton and the surrounding community. Among these were Messrs. and Mmes. Geo. Owens, Neal Norman, G. G. Scott and Rube Mullins, all of Dallas; Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Simms of Fort Worth; Mrs. and Mrs. Howard Hollingsworth of Oklahoma City; Mr. and Mrs. S. J. McQuinn of Roanoke; Mr. and Mrs. F. R. | Death* | 27 May 1943 | He died at Hopkins Co., Texas, on 27 May 1943. |
| Burial* | His body was interred at Reilly Springs Cemetery, Hopkins Co., Texas. | |
| Biography* | Richard was listed as "R. Samuel" in the 1860 census, as "Richard" in the 1870 census, as "R. H." in the 1900 census and as "Richard H." in the 1910 census. Although the 1900 census listed the year of his birth as 1856, this is not likely since he was listed as 6 years of age in the 1860 census and as 15 years of age in the 1870 census and he had a sister that was born in November of 1856. Richard's parents were listed in Meriwether Co., GA in 1850 and 1860 census records and this is where he is presumed to have been born. By 1870, Richard's mother had moved her family to Randolph Co., AL. This probably happened soon after she learned of her husband's death in the Civil War. Richard was noted living with his mother in the 1870 census of the Louina P. O. district (now Wadley), Randolph Co., AL. The family was living near Richard's grandmother, the widowed Sarah (Culpepper) Elliott, and Richard's great-uncle, William Henry Culpepper. This might have been when Richard acquired the middle name of Henry. At some point, Richard made his way to Tallapoosa Co., AL, probably with his older brother, William, and, in 1881, this was where he married. Richard and Henrietta are presumed to have settled down in Tallapoosa Co., AL where they remained until the late 1890's when they moved their family to Texas where their son, Houston G. Carlisle, was born in Sep 1899. The family was listed in Bell Co., TX in the 1900 census living near Richard's younger brother, Robert. According p. 60 of the History of Reilly Springs "R. H. and Henretta [sic] Carlisle moved to Reilly Springs in 1908. They moved from Bell County [TX] and bought the Neil Stribling farm." In the 1910 census, a 55 year old "Richard H. Carlisle" born in Georgia was listed (ED 162-193) with his wife and younger children in Hopkins Co., TX. A granddaughter, Mrs. Truman (Jane Carlisle) Swindell, wrote 5 Jul 1979, that "Richard & Henrietta Greenberry (Watts) Carlisle moved to Reilly Springs, Texas from a farm at Killeen Tex. in Bell Co. in 1908." Mrs. Swindell added that a son, William Freeman, bought the farm after Henrietta died and Richard Henry continued to live on the farm with his son until he died at age 88 in 1943. On 19 Mar 1979, Mrs. Swindell wrote "My grandfather Richard Henry Carlisle was one of the finest men I've ever known, he lived with us after his wife died. My father was William Freeman and so much like his father, I wish this world could be filled with people like them." Mrs. Ellie Swindell wrote in a book on Reilly Springs that the family was Methodist. |

| Biography* |
Harold G. Carlisle, wrote 25 Nov 1978: My grandfather Carlisle was Jeremiah Beauregard Carlisle.... He was named after the Confederate General, Pierre G. Beauregard. His nickname was "Bury." Because he had another brother whose initials were J. B., he decided to go by the initials J. M. I can remember letters addressed to my grandmother, Mrs. J. M. Carlisle. Bury came to Killeen in about 1892 or 1893. He married Annabelle Theola Docia Norman before leaving Alabama. I believe that the two oldest children, Dolphus and Nonnie, were born in Alabama. Jeremiah appears to have been listed as "Benjamin" in the 1870 census, is it possible that he took the name Beauregard after the war in honor of the General? He was listed as "Beaury" in the 1900 census and as "Jerry M." in the 1910 census. "J. M. Carlisle" was on the Marriage Bond but he appears to be listed as "J. W. Carlisle" on his marriage license to "Docia Norman." The tombstone records the name "J. M. Carlisle." Jeremiah Beauregard Carlisle's parents were recorded in the 1860 census of Meriwether Co., GA and this is where he is presumed to have been born. He would never have known his father who apparently went off to war shortly after he was born. Upon learning of James M. Carlisle's death in the war, Jeremiah's widowed mother apparently moved her family to Randolph Co., AL where Jeremiah's grandmother, Sarah (Culpepper) Elliott, was living and Jeremiah Beauregard was noted living with his mother in the 1870 census. Jeremiah has not been identified in the 1880 census. Presumably, he was living with his widowed mother, possibly in Tallapoosa Co., AL near Jeremiah's oldest brother, William. In any event, Jeremiah Beauregard Carlisle was in Tallapoosa Co., AL by 1885 when he married. Based on the birth locations of their children, Jeremiah and his wife, Docia, moved their family to Texas some time around 1893. Possibly Jeremiah's mother, Martha, moved with them since she was recorded in the household in the 1900 census. Jeremiah was noted with his family in the 1900 and 1910 census of Bell Co., TX but how long after that he remained in Bell Co., TX is not known. A great grandson, Stephen Carlisle, noted in an 18 May 1979 letter that Jeremiah Beauregard Carlisle's house at Killeen, Bell Co., TX burned taking family pictures and records with it. |

| Burial* | 18 Feb 1953 | His body was interred on 18 Feb 1953 at Killeen City Cemetery, Killeen, Bell Co., Texas. |
| Biography* | The 1900 census lists Robert's month and year of birth as Jan 1862 but the year does not seem likely given that a brother was born in Mar of 1861. The death certificate lists the date of birth as 14 Jan 1864 based on information from Robert's son, Walker Carlisle, but this seems late since Robert's father, James M. Carlisle, apparently was in the Civil War. But Robert's age was given as six in the 1870 census which would seem to support the 1864 birth date. Also in the 1900 census, the state of birth was listed as Alabama but in the 1870 census, the first census after his birth, he was listed as having been born in Georgia. This would be consistent with Robert's mother not moving her family to Alabama until after she had learned of her husband's death in the Civil War. The following is Robert A. Carlisle's obituary, from Killeen Daily Herald for Wednesday, 18 Feb 1953: Last Rites Held For R. A. Carlisle Last rites were held today at 3:00 p.m. for Robert A. Carlisle, 89, who passed away yesterday after a brief illness. Services were held at Horton-Routt Funeral Home with Rev. Homer Kluck of the First Methodist Church officiating. Burial was at Killeen City Cemetery with Horton-Routt in charge of arrangements. Mr. Carlisle had lived in Killeen for the past sixty years. He farmed most of his life and, when retired, moved here. His wife passed away fourteen years ago. He had been a member of the Methodist Church for seventy years. Survivors include two sons, Freeman (Buck) Carlisle and Walker Carlisle, both of Killeen, two daughters, Mrs. Jessie Williams of Killeen and Mrs. T. C. Warren of Temple; sixteen grandchildren. Three other children are deceased. Pallbearers for the service were his grandsons. The death certificate (State File No. 6053 4222 25) lists Robert as having lived in Killeen, Texas for 15 years. His usual residence was 190 South Second. Walker Carlisle is the informant for the death certificate and he lists Robert's place of birth as Alabama, but the 1870 census closest to Robert's birth, and the 1910 census both list Robert's birthplace as Georgia although Alabama is listed in the 1900 census. Robert Carlisle death was caused by Myocarditis Chronic which he had suffered for a few months. His condition was complicated by Influenza which lasted 10 days. |
