.
From Sharon Boling: The 1870 Clay Co. Census records the following: Dean, J. W. -- 64 -- Farmer -- Born in Georgia Dean, M. E. -- 50 -- Keeps House -- Born in South Carolina Dean, Martha -- 24 -- Born in Georgia Dean, O. T. - 17 -- Works on farm -- Born in Alabama A. E. (C?) - 13 -- Female -- Born in Alabama Pace, Mary -- 22 -- born in Georgia Pace, G. W. -- 4 -- Male -- born in Alabama All of these were living in the household of J. W. Dean. Supposition leads me to believe that O.T. Dean would be Obry Thomas, later known as Thomas A. or A.T. In a handwritten note, Viola Dean said her father's name was Aubrey Thomas. However, most records, including land grant and marriage records, list him as Alsie (Alsey) T. or Thomas A. The fact is known that Thomas had a sister called Mattie, which could be a derivative of Martha. On his marriage license to Lacy Hudson in 1872, he is listed as T. A. Dean. On his marriage license to Seletta Calloway in 1878, he is listed as A. T. Dean. In a land grant application in 1905, his name is listed as Alsie T. Dean. However, before her death, his daugher Viola wrote that his name was Aubrey (at least that is what it looks like); she also says that he was a twin, although no other record had been found of this by Viola's family. However, the "Culpepper Connections!" indicates that he had a twin who died as an infant.35 ******************** "The State of Alabama Clay County, Probate Court 3 day of September 1892 Viola and Joseph Dean, Minor heirs of Lucy Dean, deceased, Estate of -- This day came A.T. Dean, Guardian of said estate, and filed his statement, accounts, vouchers, and evidence for a final settlement of his adminstration -- It is ordered that the 3rd day of October, 1892, be appointed a day on which to make such settlement, at which time all persons interested can appear and contest the said settlement, if they think proper." |

| Biography* | | Mrs. Bessie Dean Jones wrote in a 13 May 1981 letter of the death of Lacy Hudson Dean: When Viola [Lacy and Alsey Thomas Dean's daughter] was about 2 years, she and her mother went to the field to pick some beans. They found a small watermelon-sat down under a tree to eat some. A limb fell on the Mother who then crawled to the spring. When they didn't return home the family began to search, found Viola and when questioned she replied "She gone to sp'ing." They found Lacy beside the spring, dead. . A variant version comes from Sharon Boling: When Viola was about 2, her mother took her and went to the field to pick some peas for dinner. Her dad had gone into town. Sometime during the morning, her mother picked a watermelon and sat down with Viola under a tree. She broke the watermelon open and apparently ate some of it. While she was sitting there resting, a limb fell from the tree. It hit her. She either rolled down the hill after being hit or crawled down the hill trying to get some water. When they found her, her head was either in the mud or the water (according to who is telling the story). Viola was standing on a rock close by, crying. |

Male, #33432, (15 December 1858 - 5 December 1896)
| Birth* | 15 Dec 1858 | Jacob was born on 15 Dec 1858. |
| 1880 Census* | | Jacob was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census at Clay Co., Alabama.1 |

| Biography* | | There is a question about the name of the husband of Irene Dean. A son was named Joseph Washington Hamlin, Jr. but there is a marriage license in Clay Co., AL (6 Feb 1881) for "Irene Dean" and "Jacob W. Hamlin." It was common in the South for the son of a father with a name that had the same initials to be called "Junior" even if the names them the names themselves were different. So, the name of the senior Hamlin was probably Jacob. |
