 He was the son of John Newman Oglethorpe Jr. and Elizabeth (?). 
1850 Census*26 Sep 1850 James was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census on 26 Sep 1850 at Concordia Parish, Louisiana.3 
Marriage*22 Dec 1853 He married A. Margaret Hopper at Franklin Parish, Louisiana, on 22 Dec 1853. 
1860 Census*1 Jun 1860 James was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census at Franklin Parish, Louisiana.4 
Biography* That James M. was the son of John N. Oglethorpe Jr. is based on circumstantial evidence. The 1830 Marengo AL and 1840 Concordia LA censuses both show that John N. had two sons the right age to have been James M. and his brother, Jones. And there was no other known Oglethorpe family living in the area other than Thomas Oglethorpe, whose children are largely known. Thomas's family was found in Catahoula Parish, whereas John N. Jr.'s family was in Concordia Parish, where John is thought to have died in the 1840's. James M. was there in 1850.

There is a power of attorney dated 15 Jun 1820 in Clarke Co., AL, in which a William Kendrick gives John N. Oglethorpe power of attorney to recover profits for him as Trustee of the Estate of Burrell Kendrick. Burrell Kendrick's estate records should be examined, as he seems to be John N.'s father-in-law.

So it would seem that John N. Jr. was married twice, first to a Miss Kendrick, daughter of Burrell Kendrick. He named a son Kendrick Oglethorpe. And John's son Thomas named a son Burrell K. Oglethorpe, apparently for Burrell Kendrick.

John's wife in 1820 was named Elizabeth, as she gave consent that year for her daughter Elizabeth to marry. She is presumed by this writer to have been his second wife, although that is not entirely clear. By her John apparently had four additional sons in the 1820's, two of whom were James M., and Jones. The other two have not yet been identified. The E. A. Oglethorpe (female) in 1850 and 1860 Concordia may have been the widow of one of these unknown sons.

It is clear that John N. Jr.'s wife in 1830 was younger than he was, and was too young to have been the mother of his eldest children. Also, it seems unlikely that one wife would have had children over a thirty year time span.
