Biography* Daniel Patterson Kirk was the son of John Wesley and Florela Caroline (Culpepper) Kirk. He was born and raised on his father's farm at Flatrock, near Almond to the west of Louina in Randolph Co., AL. According to L. Hoyt Kirk,3 the farm was on what is known locally as Cotton Ridge about four miles west of what is now the town of Wadley, AL. Dan was noted there with his parents in 1880 census records.

In 1898, Dan married M. Emma Brown and they settled down at Flatrock to raise their family and this is where Dan was noted with his wife and young daughter in the 1900 census. Unfortunately, Dan lost his wife a few years later. He remarried in 1909 and it was apparently around this time that he decided to leave the farm. He moved his family to Wadley and went to work in a meat market and this is where he was noted in the 1910 census. He then went on to open his own meat market in Ashland, AL. Dan died in 1960 at the age of 83.
