| Residence* | 1998 | Mary resided at Talladega, Talladega Co., Alabama, in 1998. |
| Biography* | | Mary was born at the John Alexander Hodnett family home which was built by her great-grandfather, James Hodnett, near a trading post called Frog Eye near the entrance to the Hodnett Bend of the Tallapoosa River.1 Frog Eye is in Tallapoosa Co., AL near the Chambers Co., AL border about five miles south of Wadley in Randolph Co., 2 Growing up, Mary's favorite activities were riding horses on the family farm and boating down the Tallapoosa River.2 She attended elementary school in Wadley and graduated from Wadley High School.2
Mary's father then accepted a job with Russell Mills and the family moved to Alexander City, AL and this is where Mary met her first husband.2 John Winbourn Remson had worked for a newspaper, Our Mountain Home, which became The Daily Home and he was working as an advertising salesman for The Alexander City Outlook when he met Mary.2 The couple later married and, about five years after their marriage, John and his brother, Andrew Cunningham Remson, bought Brannon's Printing Company.2 Mary assisted them with everything from answering the phones and sweeping the floors to proofreading and bookkeeping.2
When her husband died in 1952, Mary sold her share of the business to Alec Thompson who had already bought out Andrew Remson's share.2 Mary remained active in the community and, for about five years, she worked for the Talladega County Civil Defense Department.2
In 1971, Mary married Bert Lee Craft, Jr., an engineer who had moved from Hattiesburg, MS to work for Kimberly-Clark in Childersburg, Talladega Co., AL.2 Unfortunately, Mary's second husband died less than three years after they were married. Mary was 67 years old.
Mary continued her community service. Harris E. Love, the 1979 Campaign Chairman of The United Way of North Talladega County, Inc., recognized3 Mary's "outstanding leadership and performance in this campaign" adding that he was "fully aware of the many contacts and hours of work involved...." Mary also served as a docent at Heritage Hall Museum, worked to preserve antebellum homes and served as hostess for the Dr. C. L. Salter home on East Street for the "Talladega Pilgrimage" which would become "April in Talladega."2 In addition to being a member of the Talladega County Historical Society, Mary also served on the boards of Landmarks of Talladega, Oak Hill Cemetery and Marianna Greene Henry Special Equestrians.2
Mary is also active in her church, serving as an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Talladega.2
Throughout the years, Mary has traveled to such places as Greece, Spain, Africa and the British Isles. After one such trip, Mary wrote:4
My trip to the British Isles was perfect.... One of the highlights of the trip: my friend here has a cousin in London, she wrote her, Lady Davidson, and made all arrangements. The cousin, the Dowager Viscountess Davidson (you call her Lady Davidson) she is also Baroness Northchurch (a life peerage - which enables her to be a member of the House of Lords) at any rate, the arrangements were for us to have tea with Lady Davidson, shortly after arriving in London.... We put on our best bib and tucker, got a cab and off we went.... |
| Death* | 3 Aug 2006 | She died at Talladega, Talladega Co., Alabama, on 3 Aug 2006. Tip of the hat: Talladega will miss Mary Craft
Published: August 8, 2006
She was one of those colorful characters that brings a smile just by mentioning her name. At 99, Mary Craft passed away this past week, but the memories of her and the role she played in Talladega civic and historical affairs will linger for a long time to come. Craft believed in being involved. Whether it was historical preservation, Landmarks, Heritage Hall or as a volunteer with the Red Door Kitchen, you would find her at the heart of activities.
She was the kind of citizen a town is lucky to have - one who sees what it can be and works to get it there.
She will be missed by all who knew her, and Talladega will have a void that won't soon be filled.
