| Biography* | Herman Curtis Green was the son of Stephen Patrick Henry and Leonora Leslie (Culpepper) Green. Unfortunately, there is a break in the Randolph Co., AL birth records from September 1890 through November 1893 so his place of birth cannot be proven. According to his obituary,1 Herman C. Green was born in Wadley, AL but, since Wadley didn't really become a town until 1906, this can probably be interpreted as in the vicinity of what is now Wadley, AL. In any event, in 1897, his parents bought the "The Old Home" which had belonged to the Green family at Flatrock, near Almond, to the west of what is now Wadley, AL and this is where Herman grew up. Herman graduated from the University of Chattanooga in Tennessee.1 He would have been 25 years old when the United States entered World War I on April 6, 1917 and he and his younger brother, William, were drafted into the service but Herman apparently married Catherine Bloss before he went off to war. Herman and William returned home from the service in May and June of 19192 and Herman and Catherine moved to Birmingham, AL where they settled down to raise their family. They had four daughters: Eva, Leonora, Mary and Margaret.3 Herman worked as a purchasing agent for Republic Steel Corp. until he retired and he served as president of the Purchasing Agents Club and was an honorary member of the Birmingham Exchange Club.1 Herman Curtis Green died in 1968 at the age of 76. |
