| Biography* | | In a 20 Jul 1978 letter, Bryon W. Croft recorded his sister's name as "Callie Nellie Virginia Croft." The name on the tombstone is "Callie Croft Dell." She was known as "Callie." A "Callie Cooper" was baptised 27 Aug 1890 by F. M. Watts according to The Church Register of the Wesley Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church, South Colquitt County, Georgia by Lee Collins Hale, Nov 1978. It was also noted that this Callie married a "Dell." Further on in the register, there is a record of "Dell, Adophus" who was received by certificate 14 Apr 1894. However, 14 Apr 1894 was also recorded as the marriage date. From this, it appears that he married the same day he was received into the church. The name of the wife was not given. Possibly this is the date of the marriage to Callie Croft, although she would have been very young. Or possibly the date of baptism was accidentally copied as the marriage date. |

| Burial* | | Her body was interred at Wesley Chapel Cemetery, near, Berlin, Colquitt Co., Georgia.2 |
| Biography* | | Mrs. F. D. (Betty Lee Collins) Hale wrote, 9 Jan 1978, about Carrie Lucy Crosby Herndon and the death of Carrie's husband, John Frank Herndon: Grandmother was left with four young children to raise alone. Grandmother always talked about how handsome Grandpa Herndon was, tall, black hair and blue eyes. Grandmother said that she and Grandpa Herndon claimed each other for sweethearts their first day in school and remained so until death separated them and even after his death she never considered remarriage.... Grandmother Herndon was a beautiful lady, dark brown hair and grey eyes.
On 4 Dec 1978, Lee added that "grandmother Carrie Crosby Herndon had a minor heart condition that could have been inherited since I and my mother both have it." In 19 Nov 1993 letter Lee added: It is my belief that these minor heart arrhythmias are related to and may be directly caused by a problem that is far more common in our line of the family and that is Thyroid disorder - Grandmother Carrie Crosby Herndon had a goiter in her thyroid gland but never had it removed. In 1942 my mother had her Thyroid removed, along with a very large goiter that was growing around her jugular vein - This was slowly choking her to death - At that time this was a very serious operation. My heart first acted up in 1951 when I was pregnant and when I delivered there was a problem with bleeding caused by Thyroid dysfunction - My Thyroid has not worked since then. My sister had a goiter & had her thyroid removed and my brother has had some minor problems with Thyroid dysfunction - Thyroid dysfunction does cause some heart palpitations or arrhythmias - It seems in the back of my mind that somewhere I heard that grandma Alice had a goiter too - So I think the Throid disease was inherited & caused the heart problem. |

| Biography* | | Betty Lee Collins Hale sent a clipping from p. 2 of a 15 Feb 1921 paper about the death of John Frank Herndon. Lee said that her "grandmother always said he took the gun in hopes of killing a squirrel": J. F. HERNDON KILLS HIMSELF WHILE HUNTING Coroner's Jury Returns a Verdict saying his Death was Accidental. Body Found Lying, Near a Fence by School Children-Was Well Known. J. F. Herndon, a prominent farmer of the Berlin section, was found lying dead with a gunshot wound through his chest late Wednesday afternoon. A shotgun was nearby, with one empty shell. The body was found by school children on their way home. They notified members of the family. Coroner Barber went to the scene to hold an inquest. The verdict was to the effect that Mr. Herndon came to his death by a shot accidentally self inflicted. The entire load of shot penetrated Mr. Herndon's body near his heart. A fence was within a few feet of where he fell dead. It could not be determined whether he had gotten over the fence or not. The gun was between him and the fence. Mr. Herndon left home about 4 o'clock, saying he was going to drive up some cattle, adding that he was going to carry his gun with him in the hope of killing a bird. Members of the family declared that his affairs were in good condition and that he had shown no signs of having been worried about anything. Mr. Herndon was prominent in his community and the news of his tragic death was the cause of many expressions of regret. He was about 30 years old. Mrs. F. D. (Betty Lee Collins) Hale noted 19 Nov 1993 that J. F. Herndon had actually been 43 years old at the time of his death and added "he must have looked young." |
