173. Irvin K. “Arben” ADAMS. Born on 1 Nov 1855 in Bern Township, Berks Co., PA. Irvin K. “Arben” died in Berks Co., PA, on 14 Jul 1891; he was 35. Buried on 18 Jul 1891 in Charles Evans Cemetery, Reading, Berks Co., PA. At the age of <1, Irvin K. “Arben” was baptized in Bern Lutheran Church Records, on 3 Feb 1856. Occupation: Farmer.
He was called Arban in his baptism records and Irvin on several census records. He is called Arbin on the 1870 census, and his gravestone reads Ervin. An 1896 estate file by his wife lists him as “Irvin (Ervin) K. Adam”. Emily Elsie Adams (Tait) called him “Arben” in the hand written family tree she prepared in the 1930s. He certainly went by a lot of names. The family later used the name Arben for his grandson, Arben Harry Adams.

Reading Eagle, July 15, 1891, obit. Irvin Adams, son of Aaron Adams of West Reading and tenant on Amos B. Wanner’s farm in Penn township, died on Tuesday night after a brief illness, aged 35 years. He was a member of the First Reformed church and leaves a widow and three sons. Undertaker F.S. Seidel removed the remains to the home of deceased’s father in West Reading where the funeral will be held. He was taken sick in the harvest field and died soon after.

Death Certificate from Reading, Berks Co., PA indicates that Arben K. Adam died of an overdose of opium. Certifiate number 666 of 1891.

He died intestate and Emily Adams filed “Letters of Administration” in Berks Co. on 25 Jun 1896 for his property.
On 13 Jan 1877 when Irvin K. “Arben” was 21, he married Emily Clara HILL, daughter of Jeremiah S. HILL (1833-1905) & Anna Maria Eve SPENGLER (1834-1910), in Reading, Berks Co., PA. Born on 8 Jan 1857 in Cumru Twp., Berks Co., PA. Emily Clara died in Berks Co., PA, on 3 Apr 1936; she was 79. Buried in Fairview Cemetery, Shillington, Berks Co., PA.

Reading Eagle, Friday, July 20, 1906, obit. Debbie Adam. The funeral of Miss Debbie Adam, daughter of Aaron and Rebecca Adam took place from her late residence, 619 W. Penn Ave., West Reading, at 1:30 this afternoon. Rev. W. E. Harr conducted services at the house and in St. James Reformed Church. The remains were dressed in white and rested in a square walnut casket with silver trimmings and plate engraved with name and age. Interment was made in Charles Evans Cemetery. Funeral Director, F. F. Seidel.

Records of Rev. A. S. Leinbach in Berks Co., PA indicate Elam died of Scarlet Fever. These records say June 5, but other sources (including gravestone) say May 31. A passage from John 16.16 was read by the Reverand at the funeral according to his records and he charged the family $5.00 for the services. Elam was buried at the Schwartz Burial Ground, which is also known as the Bernhard Adam Cemetery in West Reading, Berks Co., PA.
