Adams, Virgil, Mr. & Mrs. 902 N. 10th

He was called “Virge” all his life and I always thought that Virgil was his first name. The 1920 census in Pottstown, PA, however, lists the 14 year old as Theodore V. Adams.

He is listed as T. Virgil Adams on marriage record for an applicatiuon filled out 15 June 1927 in Berks Co., PA vol. 83 page 233.
On 16 Jun 1927 when Theodore Virgil was 22, he married Catherine BATZ in Berks Co., PA.7

During WWII he worked for Bendix Aviation in North Hollywood, CA. I still have a report he prepared on a pilot-operated test valve of some sort. I have tried to contact anyone associated with the old Bendix Aviation in the event this report might be desired for some sort of archives, but have not found anyone.

TAIT, EMILY ELSIE (nee Adams), Long-time St. Louis resident, died in San Marcos, Texas, on December 29, 2004, at age 93; Emily was born January 14, 1911, in Albany, New York; her parents were Harry Ambrose Adams and Terrine Elsie (Wagner) Adams; Emily married Kenneth Daubert Tait in 1938 in Baltimore, Maryland; the couple did not have children; Kenneth died in 1957, and Emily never remarried; her siblings; two brothers, Virgil and Arben, and her sister Eleanor predeceased her; her nephews, Greg W. Lasley of Austin and James H. Lasley of Kenner, Louisiana, as well as several great nieces and nephews survive her.
Emily spent much of her childhood in the Reading and Pottstown areas of s.e. Pennsylvania and later went to high school in Detroit, Michigan. She graduated from Detroit Teachers College in 1932 and earned a degree in art at Wayne State University. She then went on to nursing school in Pennsylvania and received a B.S. in Education, Dept. of Public Instruction of PA, in 1934. She was a registered nurse at a number of Philadelphia area hospitals after that date and volunteered for the U.S. Army Nurse Corps Reserve during WW II and afterward. She was commissioned as a Major in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps Reserve in 1949 and was discharged at that rank in 1954. She received a MA from the New York University School of Education in 1951. She worked in the nursing profession in New York City for another ten years, then moved to St. Louis in 1961, where she began a career as a professor at St. Louis University teaching public-health nursing. She retired in 1977. She was named Missouri Nurse of the Year in 1976 and was named Professor Emeritus of Nursing at St. Louis University in July 1976.
Emily was a talented artist and worked with pencil, oil, and pastels for most of her life. Her work was featured in a number of art shows in St. Louis over the years, and many of her sketches and paintings still grace private homes, hospitals, colleges, and other institutions in the St. Louis area. She volunteered for many years at the International Institute in St. Louis, where she taught English to foreign students and helped these students become adjusted to life in the United States. She was also well known for her development of art-appreciation courses in St. Louis and elsewhere. She moved from St. Louis to central Texas in 1999 to be near her relatives.
Emily had a long and fulfilling life and will be missed by all who were privileged to know her. No services are planned at Emily's request. Any memorial donations may be made to the International Institute in St. Louis in Emily's name.

ca 1934 when Emily Elsie was 22, she first married Phillip M. WINSLOW. They were divorced on 15 Jun 1936 in Court of Common Pleas, No. 2 of Philadelphia Co., PA.
Interviewed Emily about Phillip on 3 December 2000 at her retirement home. She said it was a very brief marriage and they never even lived together. She could not recall the details. I found a divorce certificate which was rolled up with some of her other diplomas, etc.
They had no children.
On 2 Apr 1938 when Emily Elsie was 27, she second married Kenneth Daubert TAIT, son of Martin TAIT & Hilda WYNN, in Baltimore, MD.10 Born on 12 Sep 1916 in Lukens, PA. Kenneth Daubert died in VA Hospital Brooklyn, NY, on 29 Aug 1957; he was 40. Buried on 2 Sep 1957 in Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY.
Served in European theather in WWII. Kenneth was from Tamaque, PA. His widow, Emily Adams Tait, says he had a brother named Bob (Robert?) and another brother (name unk) and a sister Evelyn. Bob was apparently in “special effects” for movies, and moved out to Hollywood, CA. That is all Emily could recall in 2000 when she was nearly 90 years old.

Separation papers from U.S. Army indicate he entered the service on 20 Jan 1942 at Fort Dix, NJ and was discharged on 26 Nov 1945. He was an administrative NCO in a hospital. He served in campaigns during WWII in the Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France, and the Rhineland. His serial number was 32 203 197.

He apparently renlisted on the above date of separation and was again discharged on 25 Nov 1948 as a Master Sergeant. Reenlisted 26 Nov 1948 and discharged 9 Sep 1952. I also found an honorable discharge (and immediate reenlistment) dated 15 Dec 1955.
They had no children.
