“West Point Man Runs Amuck in Memphis”
“C. J. Exum held for robbery of drug store of $52.30.”
Armed with a pistol, he is said to have demanded narcotics and money. Riot call brings police.
By the Associated Press. Memphis, Tenn., Dec. 19. - A man whose name was given as C. J. Exum, and who is said to have been a former resident of West Point, Miss., was arrested today by the police, who responded to a riot call from a downtown office building, after he is alleged to have obtained $52.30 from an apothecary’s office, and to have attacked the proprietor after demanding and being refused narcotics. Earl Wood, apothecary proprietor, said the man was armed with a pistol and demanded the money, which was given him. He then asked for the drugs Wood said, and, presumably because he was slow in complying with the request, attacked him with a black jack. A scuffle followed in which the intruder was finally overpowered and turned over to the police. **** Is Well Known Here **** Friends and acquaintances of C. J. Exum, who formerly resided in West Point, are reluctant to believe that he is the man described in the Associated Press report from Memphis, though they admit that he was a narcotic addict. Exum was at one time in the cotton business in West Point and had other interests here. He was held in the highest esteem. His family resided here until two or three years ago.
