The walls of the nave, transept and apses are entirely decorated with mosaics on a gilded background, covering a total area of 6,340 sq m. The mosaic decorations are the work of Byzantine and Venetian craftsmen, executed between the end of the 12C and the beginning of the 13C and depicting a cycle of scenes from the Old and the New Testaments.

Banyan tree in Sicily. Greatest Tree Girth Ever The European chestnut (Castanea sativa), known as The Tree Of A Hundred Horses, on Mount Etna, Sicily, Italy, had a circumference of 57.9 m (190 ft) when measured in 1780. The tree has now split into three seperate parts.

The city walls are now to a great extent removed. Of the gates only two remain, the Porta Nuova and the Porta Felice; both are fine examples of the baroque style, the former was erected in 1584 to commemorate the return of Charles V. fifty years earlier, the latter in 1582. Outside the walls new quarters have sprung up of recent years, and the Teatro Massimo and the Politeama Garibaldi; the former (begun by G. B. Basile and completed by his son in 1897) has room for 3200 spectators and is the largest in Italy. This is the Porta Felice

Covered Salt piles of Sea Salt. Sea salt is extracted from saltpans, aided today by modern machinery, but still respecting natural rhythms. Sicilian salt has a strong taste and is rich with all the elements, which make it an indispensable part of every diet.
