Doges’ Palace served as the official residence in Venice of the doges, who were the elected officials of the former Venetian Republic. Originally built in 814, it was burned by the populace in 976, reconstructed, damaged by a second fire and then completed in the early 1400’s. This Gothic-style palace was a showplace for the artistry, architecture and craftsmanship of the day.
