Garrett died at Newtown on 25 November 1891 from softening of the brain and was buried in the Anglican section of Waverley cemetery. He was survived by three sons of his first wife Mary Ann, née Creagan, whom he had married on 30 September 1856, a son by his second wife Marcia, née Grocott, and by his third wife Elizabeth, née McPhillamy, and two infant sons.

GARRETT, Thomas (1830-91), newspaper proprietor and politician, was born at Liverpool, England, on 16th July 1830. He came to Australia with his parents when nine years of age and was apprenticed to a printer in the following year. He ran away to sea and served as a sailor-boy on H.M.S. Fly, then re-surveying the coast between Port Jackson and Hobson's Bay. From the latter port he was sent back to Sydney and there finished his articles.
Subsequently he worked on the Goulburn Herald, the Sydney Atlas, and the Melbourne Argus; after which he was employed for three years in the Government Printing Office. In 1855 he established the Illawarra Mercury at Wollongong. Later he founded the Alpine Pioneer at Kiandra and the Manaro Mercury at Cooma; the Pioneer had a short life but the Manaro Mercury lasted until 1932, and the Illawarra Mercury was still in publication in 1956. Garrett severed his connection with the Illawarra Mercury in 1867.
He entered New South Wales political life in 1860 as member for Monaro and in 1864 was elected for the Shoalhaven seat. During the next five years he acted at various periods as Chairman of Committees. In 1872 he was elected for Camden, which seat he held until June 1891. He was Minister for Lands from February 1875 to February 1877, from August to November 1877, and from January 1887 to July 1888; and he held office as Chairman of Committees from January to March 1878 and from December 1885 to March 1886. While Minister for Lands in 1875 he carried through a Lands Act Amendment Bill. He was regarded as a sound authority upon the land laws of New South Wales and their administration, and was one of the ablest debaters in the House.
He died at Newtown, Sydney, on 25th November 1891. He was married three times and was survived by his widow, five sons and a daughter:
