ABSTRACTS OF COURT ORDER BOOK NO.1 - OLDHAM COUNTY KENTUCKY 1823-1829

pg1 February 16, 1824. Court met at the house of George Varble for the first session and for each session thereafter in 1824-1825. The "Gentlemen Justices" were, in order of seniority, Richard Oglesby, James Barbe, Jack Pryor, Thomas T. Barbour, Andrew Steele, William Gatewood, Edward M. Taylor, Ellis Oglesby, Smith Felps, Thomas Ballard, William Foree and Thomas Elley. Rank was according to dates of their commissions. Sheriff was James S. Cruchfield, appointed by the GOvenor and having securities Nathaniel P Taylor and Wm. T. Barbour.

pg3 Constable Districts... 2nd "all that part lying on the south side of Harrods Creek extending as far out as James Barbee, thence a direct line to Aaron Wilhoite and that ridge contained to the road from Westport to Shelbyville". Constable Willis Snyder, securities, Abraham H. Keller and Richard Oglesby.

pg 15 March 15, 1824. Commissions of tax elected by the justices: Willis Oglesby for first district which consisted of 1st and 2nd constable dists: Richard Sharp for second dist.; Nelson Wright for third dist.

pg 24 April 19, 1824 Will of Hadley Head produced and ordered to be recorded. Executors James, Benjamin and Zachariah Head gave bond $18,000 secured by Ellis and Richard Oglesby. On motion of executors, appraisers apptd. were Ellis and Richard Oglesby, John Mount, Hezekiah Woodsmall and William Dockings.

pg 26 Estate: will of Wm Oglesby proved by witness Stephen H. Maddox. Executors: Ellis Oglesby and Jesse Oglesby gave bond $12,000. Appraisers apptd. Wm. T. Barbour, Joseph Roney, LEwis Swinney, James Roney. Thos. Akins.

pg 27 Guardian: Jesse Oglesby apptd. guardian for his children Mariah, Mildred, Nancy, Hadley, Polly, Richard, Alfred, Matilda, Eliza, Rachel, and Martha for the devise left them in the will of Hadley Head.

"from cross roads at Edward M. Taylor to cross roads at Wm Stevenson on road from Newcastle to Brownsville" P. H. Blankenship, Joe Railey, E. M. Taylor, Mrs. E Taylor, Henry Smith, John Head, Charles Anderson, E. Vancleave and Levi Wooden.

"from cross roads at Cummins to crossroads at Edw. M. Taylor on road from Shelbyville to Westport: four Barnhills, Finley, Taylor, two Mounts, Fisher, Howe, three Grimes, Wm Woodsmall, James Head, James Campbell, Thos Potts, Robert Wasson, Beal Wooden, two Ellis and John Bays. ALSO on pg 58 this part listed again as : from Shelbyville to Westport on the part of the said road commencing at the cross roads at Edward M Taylors from thence to John Bays gate" Wm Woodsmall, Jefferson H Woodsmall, James Had, James Campbell, Redding Fisher, Wm Mulligan, Hercules Ellis, James Thompson, Thos. Mount, John Mount, Abraham and Lenord Grimes, Archibald Howe and John Bays.

"from cross roads at Edw. M Taylor to Overstreets grocery on road from Newcastle to Brownsville" Washington Oglesby, James Hill, John Parks, Wm Fitzgerald, Benj Willhoit, Zach. Head, Abm. Kitcley (sic), Wm P Rodman and Mitchell Overstreet.

pg 51 June 21, 1824 Trustees for the Town of Lynchburg apptd. were Richard Oglesby, Richard Barbour, Thomas Elley, Smith Felps and Thos T Barbour.

pg 67 'from Frankfort to Louisville commencing where the said road leaves the Westport road from thence to Ellis Oglesbys still - house and that all the hands in the following bounds be allotted him (Joseph Carter) to keep the same in repair - down Floyds fork from the Lick fork and crossing at William Stowers... thence to Frederick Foibles, Ellis Oglesby, Mrs. Ellis thence to the Hodges's thence to beginning."

July 19, 1824

pg 75 Election: Ordered that William Gatewood and Ellis Oglesby be and they are hereby appointed Judges of the ensuing election to be held at George Varbles in this county on the first Monday in August next and that Nelson Wright be appointed clerk of said election.

pg 76 Overseer of road: "from Frankfort to Louisville, that part of said road lying between Oglesby's still house and Richard Sharps" Joseph Roney, and "the hands in the following bounds to wit commencing at E. Oglesby still house thence to Frederick Foibles thence meandering Floyds fork to Richard Sharps thence to Wm Oglesby former place of residence then to Wm hunter, thence to Henry Smyser thence to the beginning"

pg 94 November 15, 1824 Emancipation of James, a man of color, by Joshua Oglesby of St. Clair County Illinois who inherited James from his father, Wm Oglesby of Oldham.

February 21, 1825

pg 115 Public buildings: "A motion was made for the appointment of Commissioners to let the erection of the public buildings for this county and the following justices voted in the  affirmative: Andrew Steele, Thomas Elley, Thomas M Ballard, William Gatewood and William Foree and those who voted in the negative were Richard Oglesby, Thomas T Barbour, Edward M Taylor, Smith Felps and Ellis Oglesby and the court being tied upon said motion the same was consequently overruled."

March 21, 1825

pg 121 Public buildings: motion to let erection was again tied, affirmative T Elley, R Barbour, A Steele, W Gatewood; negative, R & E Oglesby, E Taylor and S Felps.

pg 122 Taxes: the following commissioners were appointed "for taking in the lists of taxable property in this county for the present year"; first district Willis Oglesby, second district Richard Sharp, and third district Nelson Wright.

pg 131 Public buildings: "the prospostion having been mad to the court to proceed with the erection... was overruled" affirmative T Elley, R Barbour, A Steele, and W Gatewood; negative R Oglesby, T Barbour, S Felps, E Taylor, E Oglesby, and J Pryor.

pg 185 March 20, 1826 Sheriff's deputy: Jacob Oglesby appointed

pg 188 Tax Commissioners apptd. to take the list of taxable property for the year 1826: John Stevens, Nelson Wright, Wm Adams, David Lane, Peter Foree, Willis Oglesby, Hezekiah Foree and Fitzhugh Thornton.

pg 210 July 17, 1826 Election : Judges for the ensuing August election apptd. were Thos T Barbour, Wm Foree, Moses Tandy, Wm Gatewood, ELlis Oglesby, and James Barbee: clerks: Zachariah Woodfolk, Nelson Wright and James F Wilson. (James Wilson is husband to Jacob Oglesby's daug. Emiline)

pg 273 May 21, 1827 Tavern permit to Richard Oglesby at his house in Brownsville.

pg 277 County seat: vote taken: for Westport 545 votes; for "cross roads near Edward M Taylor on the lands of William Taylor" 623 votes. " It is therefore considered by the court that the said crossroads (to be hereafter called and known by the name of Lagrange) be the permanent seat of justice in and for this county and that James Head, Edward M Taylor, John Willet, William Wells, Benjamin Coons, John Stephens and William Rodman be and they are appointed Trustees for the town of Lagrange hereby vesting them with full power and authority to receive from William Taylor.. a regular deed of conveyance for the fifty acres proposed by said Taylor." Lagrange to be " laid off into conventional streets and lots, and the lots shall be disposed of at public auction the court having previously advertised such sale at the door of the courthouse two months."

pg 278 Courthouse: John Mount, Jacob Oglesby, Wm Woodsmall and Simon Yewell apptd. to let the erection of the courthouse in the town of Lagrange. "In pursuance of the Act passed Dec. 13, 1798 concerning the establishment of towns, Wm Taylor entered into bond of one thousand pounds secured by Ellis Oglesby.

November 20, 1827

pg 339 Writs: "Agreeable to an Act of Assembly passed February 3rd 1818 and an amendatory act passed December 13, 1820 it is ordered by the Court that Edward M Taylor Esq. in the place of Richard Oglesby be appointed for the purpose of awarding writs of injunction and of ne exeat and to grant writs of Habeas Corpus.

February 18, 1828

pg 342 Attorney for the county: William H Field apptd for the next year. Sheriff: Richard Oglesby produced his commission appointing him sheriff.

May 19, 1828

pg 357 Justice of the peace: Jacob Oglesby was commissioned by the Governor "to fill the vacancy occasioned by the appointment of Richard Oglesby Sheriff"

pg 358 Public building: "Philip R Eubank Esq. in his proper person came into court and moved said court to proceed to the appointment of commissioners to let the erection fo the public buildings of this county in the town of WESTPORT. And on the motion being taken whether they should now proceed with the erection of teh public buildings of said county and question  was decided in the negative as follows to wit. Those who voted for the motion are as follows, Jack Pryor, Andrew Steele, Wm Foree, James Sublitt, and Moses Tandy. Those who voted in the negative are Ellis Oglesby, Edward M Taylor, Smith Felps, Thos T Barbour, John Redd, Jacob Oglesby, James Densford and William Gatewood. Absent Jack Pryor and Wm Gatewood.

Stray pound: "A motion was then made to proceed with the erection of a stray pound and was decided in the negative as follows to wit. Those who voted for the motion were Andrew Steele, Moses Tandy, James Sublitt, and Wm Foree. Those who voted against were Ellis Oglesby, Edward M Taylor, Smith Felps, Thomas T Barbour, John Redd, Jacob Oglesby and James Densford."
