"Vacation Days" Diary – Hartsville, Tenn

Thursday – June 24

Morning

Arrived at Hartsville, met by cousins Allie, Ed, Alma and Analiza

Afternoon

Went to Mrs. Johnson’s. Went over to Mrs. Burnleys after Alice.

Friday – June 25

Wrote letter to Mother.

Saturday – June 26

Went to town – Miss Annie, Mrs. George, Alice, Alma and drove toward Willard. Met Dora Puryear in town. Also went to oatfield Sat. morning about eight o’clock and stayed until dinner.

Sunday – June 27

Went to Beech Grove to Sunday School and then to Hillsdale to church where I got almost scared to death by a woman shouting. Ate dinner with Mr. Herman Merryman. Gladys Haliburton of Franklin, Ken and Lorine Merryman came home with us. Stopped at Cousin Ada’s on the way back. Sunday night – Alma – Analiza – Alice – Gladys - Lorine – I – Thomas – DeWitt – Haden all played games etc. and had a very good time.

Monday – June 28

Went to tobacco patch and helped weed it. Went over to Alice’s – stayed over at Cousin Aggies a while.

Tuesday – June 29

Went black berry picking. Took salt bath afterwards to kill chigers. Wrote to mother. (morning)

Afternoon

Made some chocolate caramel candy – ate it in the cellar. Got strangled while down there drinking sweet milk out of candy dish. Ate cherries. Read part of "Miss Minerva and William Greenbill." Sat out on rocks near branch with Alice and had a nice conversation. Went to town to show – "The Thunderbolt."

Wednesday – June 30

Churned – (abut 5 minutes)

Went in wading. The next is a hair raising and weakening experience! While in wading, Alice and I decided to get some blackberries, so we went to a bush where some big, juicy ones were. I jumped up on some rocks and heard a queer noise. Next we heard something like this – s –s – s – s – etc. We didn’t see the snake but that was not required to believe. Went to town – to drugstore, (ice cream), peanuts, candy. Had a fine time in drugstore. Alma and Analiza went home with us, Alma and M.L.B. had to wash dishes while A.B. and I played hiding behind the bed from whence came some giggles which betrayed us.

Thursday – July 1

Went in wading in creek (Goose). Went in swimming in the branch. While we were in wading we thought we heard some one and then we saw some rocks falling into the water from over the weeds. We left there. We found out afterwards that it was Uncle Marshall. Spent the night with Aunt Matt and took a car ride to town while there. Had a very nice time. Cut out pictures for life book.

Friday – July 2

Came back over to C. Allie’s. Went back to Alice’s with Alice to get my things – went back to C. Allie’s that night. Went to show "In Old Kentucky" with Thomas, DeWitt, Annie, Eva, Alma and had a fine time. Ate candy coming back.

Saturday – July 3

Went wading. Afternoon – went to town. Night – went to a party at Eva Woodmores. Got home at five after eleven.

Sunday – July 4

Went to Sunday School and church. Big crowd came home with us. Met Mrs. J.L. White (Miss Ida Griggs.) She said she knew mother. Played until after ten o’clock.

Monday – July 5

Went swimming in the branch. Went over to Emma Louises’.

Tuesday – July 6

Went up to Cousin Ada’s spent the day. Read part of "Tarzan of Apes".

Wednesday – July 7

Went to town with Cousin Mary. Went fishing. Went back to town after Cousin Leslie. Met Ben C. Hall while there.

Thursday – July 8

Went to Cousin Allie’s. Made some candy. Went to town with Cousin Mary. (Made a "mash" on Harry Upshaw.)

Friday – July 9

Went and had pony shod. Alice spent the night here.

Saturday – July 10

Went to Aunt Matt’s. Had to clean up house for C. Allie (morning).

Sunday – July 11

Went to Sunday School at B.G. went home with Roana Marshall. A.B., R.M. and I walked over to Ada Rankins. Played games (night) and had fine time. Went home with Alice.

Monday – July 12

Went to town with Miss Annie. Made another "mash" – Alfred Dalton.

Tuesday – July 13

Came home from Alice’s. Had good time (night) playing.

Wednesday – July 14

Left for home.
