Genealogical Notes on Elias Alexander

From Alexander Kin, Volume One by Charles C. and Virginia W. Alexander

Elias Alexander was born in Somerset County, MD. On February 26, 1679 (from Somerset Register.) He died in 1747 probably near Slate Hill, York County, PA. It is thought by most all students of Alexander genealogy that he married Sophia, the daughter of Joseph Alexander, tanner. One source says that he later married Ann Taylor of New Munster. He left no will so there has been much speculation as to the names of his children. One source says that they were: William, Abraham, Zebulon, Isaac, Ezra, Elias and Arthur. These records were copied from a record written in 1853 by W.R. Morgan. Mr Morgan descended from Abraham’s son Nathanial through his daughter Mary Wilson Alexander who married Nicholas R. Morgan. This Abraham was supposedly the same Abraham who was Chairman of the (committee that drafted the ) Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence.

The Cecil County, MD Deed book 7, page 146 records a deed between Jedediah Alexander, son and heir of Elias Alexander and Ann, his wife, of the county of Lancaster, PA., and James Porter of Cecil County, MD. The tract of land was called Slate Hill and was on the east side of the Susquehanna River in Cecil County. This was dated August 15, 1749. Later the same year, Jedediah’s residence was given as York County, PA. Jedediah’s will was made on Aug 31, 1749 and probated Mar 26, 1750, in York County, PA. He willed that his mother get one third of Slate Hill. This would seem to be her dower interest, so this is possibly where she and Elias lived. He also named in his will brothers William, Isaac, Francis and Elias, and sisters Ester and Mary. There was no mention of Abraham, Ezra, Zebulon and Arthur above mentioned as also the sons of Elias.
